Racism in Rugby League

Just out of interest... where do people draw the line when it comes to racism and prejudice?

What is the difference between Boyd doing monkey impressions at Gilly, a Lancashire fan slagging of a Yorkshire fan and a lean, yet muscular second rower calling an amateur prop a fatty? Neither of those being bullied can really help how they are. Yet the latter two are commonly accepted (even in heated exchanges).

Where is the line drawn, and why?

I have to agree with you on this. People calling Scousers and Mancs is racist yet it is socially acceptable to do this as it’s classed as banter.
It’s not offence towards skin colour but of origin, we are all born in England so if a English born Asian is being called a Yorkshire so and so, is this racist?
I don’t think people should be called racist for calling a person for where they come from. Personally i think a racist is calling a person for the colour of their skin. No doubt some will disagree with me but everyone has their own opinion.

Im now in an RE lesson and im doing prejudice... Racism cropped up today and i had to right a passage about it, its funny i included sport.

Remember when Martin Offiah had his hair bleeched. Wasn't his nickname in the team Guinness, refering to his black skin and white hair? I'm sure I remember a player calling him this.

Isn't this racist, even if in so called fun.

Calling someone a scouser is not racism. Racism = colour. I am about to say something controversial and first of all I am neither racist nor would I do it because I actually found when playing sport that mouthing off was a sign of weakness BUT I believe anything and everything can be said on a sports field and it is completely different from normal life. I have always believed what happens on the sports field stays there.

My belief is old fashioned and unpopular.

I have been verbally abused whilst playing sport even by adults when I was a youngster. I have been assaulted by spectators. None of it ever bothered me.

Do you answer your own question in what you wrote , the line is drawn between being a racist and a bullie Is a racist someone who abuses a person of 'as the word imply s' a differant race .A bullie just abuses anyone who is not of his own direct group which could be anything like fat .

Both can be as bad as each other and probably overlap on occasions with a certain type of person capable of doing both(ie Boyd a bully and racist at least on the rugby field)

Their seems to be a stigma attached to racism that bulling doesn't carry this is wrong, i think this is due to an over sense of political correctness .

Interesting question Rob. I have asked the same myself on many occasions. IMO you could argue that the fight against true racism is being hindered by calling people like Jade Goody a racist when she never uttered a word to that bloke out of the Jacksons.

Personally speaking if I heard someone call a black person "you black *******" I would not instantly believe that the offender was a racist. It could be that he was merely tring to be offensive and the word "black" would have been replaced by "fat", "ugly", "irish", "pie eating" or whatever, depending on who he was addressing.

I know of people that won't go into out local store because it is owned and ran by an Indian family. I also know of someone who told one of that family that they didn't belong here. That is the type of racism that needs to be addressed IMO, not Jade's or even Ron Atkinsons.
