set to miss out yet again!!!

Post by wigan4life »

I've just read on teletext that Warrinton are set to announce the signing of Martin Gleeson from St. Helens on Friday at noon.
He's suppose to have cost about 200k.

I can't understand why we(Maurice Lindsay) didn't get in there first?

Despite the fact he plays for St. Helens, he's probably 2nd best british centre and is a proven finisher. Also he's a wiganer, so he fills everyone's criteria so i just can't understand why we didn't put in a bid.

We were supposedly offering £1m to Gasnier so surely we could have spent about £300k on Gleeson and still have given him a high wage packet.

Also this week De Vere has announced he's going to the Giants next year so Wigan are running out of transfer targets centre-wise, and fast.

Anyone agree?

Must admit I was disappointed too but perhaps Maurice is playing the long game and is going to offer St George money for the last two years of Gasniers contract, Aussie clubs do not normally get transfer money so perhaps Mo thinks there is still a chance on Gasnier Even so Gleeson was a Wiganer, we should have got him from Huddersfield in the first place. Good news about Tickle though, win some lose some :conf:

But we don't need any more centres! Well in my opinion anyway, am sure I've written this somewhere else or maybe that was a dream too who knows..but we have aspi, brown, melling and hodgson already and as far as i know all of them are staying. We also have an un naturally placed ste wild playing very well in that position not forgetting gary connolly, who i know isnt as fast anymore but he's experienced and if we needed a centre he could play there.

At the same time I hate the thought of cheering on an ex saints player *shudders*
Anyway can you imagine how much the betting controversy would be brought up though if he moved to wigan? Not really been mentioned recently but I can bet (<--accidental) if he had moved to wigan, it'd be the first thing the papers mentioned. Look at what they said when it was announced that they had bet, it wasn't "long and gleeson saints players" it was "long and gleeson from wigan"

wow i gotta lot to say today :D

Gasnier isn't going to come, it seems only Mo hasn't accepted it yet, the guy would be ambitionless if he came to Super League.

As for Gleeson, good player but no chance I'd want to see him in Cherry and White because of the principal he has the total disrespect and disregard for his club and team mates to bet against them!

He is a good player. But i would agree with 'Mrs Lam' an 'robjoenz'. We dont need him, coz we have got anuf centre. Also i wouldnt like to see him in cherry an white.

We have got the people that we need. 'Seuseu', 'Davico etc.

I would love to see Gleeson in a Wigan shirt, he is the second best British centre by a country mile. he has pace, he can sidestep, he can tackle, and has a great pair of hands and great vision. He is better than anyone we have at present quite easily, if you put him inside Dallas or Carnet and they would love it, the would get plenty of ball and in good positions. He has the ability to take the ball and beat a man from a standing start and he knows when to give the ball.

Plus if Saints are willng to sell him, I think that would leave a bitter taste in his mouth and he would love playing against Saints.

I totally agree, Gleeson would be a good asset have in Cherry & White PLUS he is another player not on our overseas quota, wouldn't cost us as much as Gasnier, leaving more money in the coffers for more props.

...and he doesn't mind putting a grand on his team to lose when he is playing!

One thing that's been forgotten is that Gleeson's brother is already at Warrington and probably has been putting in good words etc. That's inevitably been a factor. To be honest I always thought Gleeson was overrated. He's got pace but sometimes it looks like he uses it all to run to the nearest pie shop. Is this the end of the Stains fat club with Barry Lard having retired, the often-overweight Gleeson moving on leaving just big Kieron to eat all the leftovers himself?

The main problem with Gleeson, as Rob mentioned, is his attitude. I don't care how good a player is, if he's prepared to back against his own team then he's not a team player and not worthy of the trust of other players or spectators. We've got a tremendous team spirit at the moment, it would be stupid to upset that by bringing in someone like him to potentially ruin it all. The fact he's being sold doesn't surprise me at all, how must the rest of the Saints team feel about him and Long?

we don't need any centres, but why would we want someone like Gleeson who is quite happy to bet against his own team?
