Catalans -v- Wigan - Referee, Ian Smith

www.rfl.uk.com:
Catalans Dragons v Wigan Warriors 7.00pm
Ref I Smith TJ C Sharrad TJ M Maurel (FRA) RR TBC IC TBC VR TBC MC I McGregor
at Stade Gilbert Brutus, Perpignan
Also there is a French touchjudge. It's nice to see that we're helping to develop officials from abroad.

Should'nt be allowed as it leaves them open to the charge of being biased. If we want to help develop French officials then they should be employed to officiate in games involving UK teams over here.

We don't develop Wigan based officials by letting them ref or run the line in Wigan matches for the obvious reason and I don't see why this is any different.

So you are saying we should have gone for Ashley Klein as referee then with Ian Smith being English? Clint Sharrad is ok as he is Australian, who would you suggest as the other TJ?

There is only one French outfit in the competition so it is obvious this will leave a French official open to accusations of bias. And as to Klien reffing the game instead of an English ref - that isn't a bad idea either.

So what are they to do. If he has links or is from the Catalan team area then he should not be involved but if hes from outside any connection with the club then i dont have a problem.

We have English refs Referring English teams. Should they be stopped from doing that.

Though Ganson should.

I dont hear the french complaining about it being unfair to have 2 out of the 3 officials being English playing a french club in France.
I would just be happy to have decent impatial good refs before we worry about international bias.

You have to be careful with french officials though. They are notorious for cheating. Even the great Kangaroo teams struggled in the face of it.
