Whelan and Lindsay have allegedly been approached a couple of times now by a consortium, or consortia, interested in buying into the club with a view to taking it on full time at some point.
Various names have been mentioned, including Shaun Edwards, a couple of RU millionaires and the exceedingly wealthy casino guy who owns half of Blackpool. The word I got was that, this time last year, a very serious bid was made but got nowhere because the asking-price was too high. However, rumours persist that a new, more ambitious bid will shortly be made.
This rather suggests that our current owners are at least prepared to listen to offers, and why should this surprise us? Wigan RL is a successfull business with a well-known brand name, and David Whelan and Maurice Lindsay are both knocking on a bit. Neither are likely to be in charge for too much longer.
But I suspect there's an element of desperate hopefulness where your Latics chum is concerned. Their future looks bleak indeed and quite a few of them are now grabbing at straws. Wigan RL being sold on wouldn't necessarily be to our detriment, but he clearly sees it as the only possible way that Latics MIGHT retain their current status as pole sports club in Wigan.

Probably the same Latics fans who believe that Wigan Warriors wouldn't be playing at the JJB if Latics got to the Premiership but just look what happened there....nothing.warriors posted:

Don't worry when Latics get relegated it will some how me Wigan Warriors fault, rugby ruins the pitch, they take our money and the usual rubbish.
Whealans main interest is Latics but that doesn't bother me really, he was a football player himself so it is understandable but Mr Whealan is also a business man and he is not going to sell the only club who make a profit. Latics made a loss of £4 million last year, even with the increase in money for Prem clubs they will still probably spend all of it on a new players.

Re: wigan warriors up for ...
Wasn't there a rumour about the bloke who runs Quins RL or someone involved with them at board level being interested and having tabled an offer?
The bloke is supposed to have connections with Wigan in some way. Being from around the area or something like that.
Can't remember his name.
One thing is for sure Mo and DW can't go on forever so ownership and the running of the club will change one day.
As far as the latics fan goes I guess they forget DW also won't be their owner forever either!

Ian Lenagan, and he's a Wiganer through and through. Doesn't live in the town any more, but born here, grew up here, educated here, season-ticket holder at Central Park for many years, etc, etc.DaveO posted:

Don't know if he's involved in this or not. But he's a very, very wealthy man.
As for Latics, I wonder what they think will happen when David Whelan washes his hands of them. They're only where they are at present because they're his personal obsession. Once he's out of the picture, do they seriously think some hard-headed board of directors is going to keep on pouring millions into the bottomless pit that is an underachieving Premiership team?
