Not sure if anyone picked up a program and read Martyn Sadler's page on booing the fans.
i'll just take a few points from it and sum up.
'Rugby League players who have lost to a supposedly inferior team have left the field to a catcall of boos and jeers.'
Now, this for me says a lot about some fans. i never boo my own team as i think it's a sign of disrespect to our players and the other teams players.
I think Salder and yourself are missing the point. In fact Sadler is just jumping on a bandwagon. He is a journo after all and not one I particularly respect.
In my experience the only times Wigan have ever been boo'ed is when the fans think that that have not put the effort in. Not because they have lost.
I also completely disagree with the notion it shows lack of respect for the opposition. It is all about how Wigan are playing not the opposition. Watching Wigan drop the ball, saunter back in defence, play one man Rl and miss tackles are what elicits the boos.
It was that shambolic attempt at stopping Manu that got some fans booing v Hull, not disrespect for Hull.
i don't think some fans realise this sport isn't as easy as football where 4 teams boss the divison each year. do we pay enough respect to these so called 'inferior teams'? Hull KR for example. i bet 99% of our crowd would have bet on us beating them this season. so far it hasn't happened. which begs the question, do we pay other teams the respect they deserve? i don't think so.
In the overall scheme of things in RL terms HKR are not a very good side. That is a simple fact. Seeing us perform as poorly as we have done against them at home, twice, deserves the Wigan team to be criticised. That isn't lack of respect and should not be used as an excuse not to criticise the team when they play as poorly as they have done against them or anyone else.
obviously the wire had the same idea as we did last week that we should have waltzed past the so called 'inferior team'.
Didn't see the game so can't comment on Wire's performance but I'd hazard a guess the fans were dissatisfied with the effort put in by their team. If the Wire team were guilty of taking the opposition lightly that is a coaching and team problem but I am sure the fans only get riled when the effort is not there, not when they get beat.
wakefield were top at one point, so were KR, who would have tipped that? it's a much closer competition than some think and teams are no longer guranteed 2 points against 'inferior opposition'. i think some of our fans need to realise that and respect it.
It has nothing to do with the other team and the standard of the "inferior teams" is a different point.
