salary cap

can someone enlightem me on the actual salary cap system used by the stains.
i was talking to a stains fan before the season started and he said we have a great team at the moment but how long it will last is another thing.
i took this as meaning they had a few players coming out of contract and couldn't pay them any more money due to capping.
now they seem to have all got new and extended contracts.
am i being niaive in thinking long, wellens etc have taken a drop in salary just to get a contract extention.
i would love to be a fiend of stains accountant and see the way they do their books.

Might simply be that a lot of their key players are coming to the end of their careers; Long, Cunningham, Sculthorpe are all in their 30's now, as is Fozzard.
