Would it help referees and rugby league in general if they were to use a similar system to that used in Ice Hockey were they have minor and major penalties.
Minor penalties are generally for technical offence and in rugby could result in 5 minutes in the sin bin while more serious offences like high tackles get a major penalty and 10 minutes in the sin bin. The red card still remains for really serious incidents.
At the moment holding down and high tackles both receive the same punishment even though a high tackle is clearly more dangerous.
It also helps referees in situations were a players is trying to bend the rules but a 10 minute sin binning would seem over the top.
Also I think RFL should apply a rule similar to the false start rule in athletics, so if one players commit a high tackle it counts against the whole team and if a team commits 4 high tackles then the player who commits the fourth will be sin binned.
Thoughts?
