The try everyone is referring to scored by Henry Paul was, I am almost certain, scored on Good Friday 1995. Faz dropped out from under our own posts, two Saints defenders let it bounce and it sat up beautifully for HP who was following up at pace to race through unopposed under the posts, he scored a great try in the first half too and we lifted the Championship trophy.
In that same season, one of my favourite tries was scored by Inga at Knowsley Road on Boxing Day, we were winning 18-0 when Henry was unjustly sent off and the officials contrived to send another three of our players to the bin with the result we played nearly an hour with 11 men and Saints through the likes of revolting players like Tommy Martyn, Bobby Goulding and Sonny Nickle came back to lead. Then with barely a few minutes to go Gary Connolly flung the ball hopefully out of a tackle, Inga collected it on the charge and went through about four saints defenders to score, I have never been as jubilant at any sporting fixture I don't think, just to rub it in Offiah went over in injury time and danced over the try line and I just remember being in fits of laughter as sick Saints fans stormed out and their on field stewards were clearly giving him the fingers just yards from him!!
Other favourites I have seen in the flesh apart from the obviously mentioned above of Gill, Kenny, Hanley and Offiah at Wembley include:-
Mark Preston v Leeds (h) 1989-1990
Martin Offiah v Castleford (h) 1994-1995 (we were 12-0 down in crucial league game he ran from own line)
Frano Botica v Saints (a) 1990-1991
Joe Lydon in 1987 Premiership Final
Phil Clarke v Halifax (h)1994-95 (ball passed through 18 pairs of hands)
Martin Offiah's fifth Wigan vs Bradford Challenge Cup semi final 1992
Dean Bell vs Leeds (a)think it was 1992
There were so many during the period between about 84 and 95 that I could go on for hours, obviously Brian Carney is a worthy heir to the likes of Offiah in the spectacular stakes, but one of the most incredible sporting experiences I have ever had was seeing Martin Offiah score ten tries against Leeds, you felt this was a team that truly could do anything, any schoolboy back garden fantasy you could come up with might just happen the following week at Central Park
