it was pointed out (cant think by who, maybe clarke) during the commentary of either hull or leeds match, that trent barrett has either scored or his final pass / kick has resulted in more than 50% of wigan's tries this season.

Now if this isn't havimg a major influence than i don't know what is. :eh:

James flippin' Roby what the hell is going on?
Totally gutted, we all detest that he has been named 'MOS', but had Robey been in the Wigan side, showing the same form, he would probably still have been chosen. Check out his stats this season. Most metres from acting half, most clean line breaks, up with the rest with off-loads, tackles made, and yards run with the ball. Robey has had a massive season, just like Trent. Maybe if we had turned Leeds over, TB would have got the nod. IMO, sadly not, but still a world class player.

Yes but it's all about "impact", according to the definition of the MoS - my point is that Saints would have been just as successful without Roby (who only played part-time anyway). Without Barrett, we'd have been nowhere.
I can count at least 7 or 8 games that Barrett's won single handedly for us (either by scoring or creating); you can't say the same for Roby with Saints.

And do you think none of that is down to the fact he comes off the bench after KFC has softened the opposition up? Also he plays hooker in the "Higham style" so is bound to make meters compared to a half back. The stats say very little about the influence he had. If stats were that important give the MoS to Fisher of HKR for most tackles made (or Pat Richards for being top points scorer).

Roby is one half of a double act and while an excellent player has not had the influence on Saints season that Barrett has had on ours in any way you care to measure it.

I dread to think where we would have been without Barrett but instead of scrapping with Salford we ended up scrapping with Bulls, Hull and Leeds for a GF spot. The main reason we did was Trent Barrett.

I have seen some stupid decisions in my time watching RL but overlooking TB for MoS takes the biscuit.

Roby winning the Man of Steel is an utter farce.

Even a judging panel which consisted of Mr Maghoo wearing two eyepatches throughout the entire season could have still known Barrett has been the stand out player of Super League.

It now appears on awards night if you aren't involved in the Grand Final then don't bother showing up.

How a player who has won the players & sports writers awards cannot win the top award just beggars believe ... it's stuff like this that makes me despair at the sport I love.

It's almost as controversial when Springfield venture scout unit (wigan) won the national Dragnet hiking championships in 2003 after using a bus to gain 20 miles advantage

I'm not entirely sure I know what this "Sports' Writers Award" is, considering that the Man of Steel is "Voted on by members of the Rugby Football League press" (according to Wikipedia) - aren't these the same people who chose the Sports' Writers Award?!

The BBC website from when Donkey Wellens got it last year said "The Man of Steel Award, decided by a panel of journalists and coaches, goes to the player adjudged to have made the greatest impact on the domestic season.", so perhaps it's not just the journos, but you would have expected the coaches to have more sense as well given that most of them explicitly cited Barrett as someone they had to target to stop Wigan.

Sky Sports says "The Man of Steel is decided by a panel of rugby league experts." That could mean anything at all!

But I suppose it wouldn't be rugby league if there was actually clarity and transparency in these things instead of the usual lack of anyone knowing what is really happening...

Things like this don't usually bother me in the slightest, but as Dave said to overlook Barrett for MoS this year given his contribution to dragging us to 2 semi-finals is an embarrassment.

Roby is a talented player and Young Player would have been a much more appropriate award - assuming he was eligible??

He hasn't even been the best player at Saints this year, Pryce and Fozzard have both been miles ahead of him on that count. Also feel sorry for the likes of Demetriou, Ellis, Morrison, Peacock et al who must be equally scratching their heads at this baffling decision :o

Another excellent point showing the relatively small impact Roby has had: can you imagine an opposition coach saying "all we need to do to beat Saints is close Roby down"?

They said it (correctly) about Barrett - they just couldn't (always) do it.
