Deferred payments!

Surely that's against the "spirit of the cap"? Wonder why they didn't have points deducted?

NRL and SL do have diffeent rules though. They might have it in writing that they can do it whilst in SL its a grey area.

I haven't seen the NRL salary cap rules but the only reason it is a grey area in the SL ones is because they have a ridiculous catch-all rule in them. Rules like that need to be removed so everyone knows where they stand. Wigan should have challenged the ruling not get the points back but to get the whole thing cleared up.

There is nothing in the SL cap rules that specifically forbid deferred payments.

There is a rule that says any mechanisms club use with respect to the cap can be deemed not in the spirit of the cap.

It is interesting the Aussies seemingly defer payments as par for the course.

I just can't see what is wrong with it. The club stays under the salary cap which means the players are not being paid more in total at one club than another which is the object of the exercise.

I believe had it not been Wigan who had used this mechanism to stay within the cap no action would have been taken. But with all the fuss kicked up by the Cas chairman and the media the RFL decided that had to punish Wigan so used the convenient notion of what Wigan did not being in the spirit of the cap. That is just my opinion but it would not surprise me in the least if they bowed to pressure to be seen to be doing something.

It depends on the exact definition of deferring payments doesn't it. In the Mason situation it may well have been a case of 'we're a bit skint this year but we'll pay you more next year' rather than making an amendment to a contract which was already signed.

Either way the salary cap is totally crap.

Dave is correct. The RFL were furious that they had been made to look foolish and felt they had to be seen to take a tough stance because of the pressure from other fans and some clubs.

What happens to the deferred payments now that Mason has gone to a new club? Can t'Bulldogs pay them willy nilly without these payments counting on their salary cap payments for 2008 as Mason is no longer on their playing register? I refuse to believe that Mason has lost these deferred payments for ever.
