newton only left because of millward...higham only went via bradford cos saints wouldn't deal with us..

he is a penalty machine but he can also do things higham can not. higham also can do things terry carnt but all roubd i think we would suit newton and mcullrum. higham and mcullrum are too alike we need some different direction

IMO we need to keep hold of Mickey, great in defence and good accelaration from dummy half. I do like Newton and would like to see him back but WITH Higham and definately NOT for him. Having said that i tip McIlorum for a great future. Anyway, IL has said its a load of twaddle so guess thats put that one to bed. Keep up the great work Mickey mate and don't let ya head drop, a true Warrior!!

Exactly, IL said it's a load of rubbish.

"It is part of my job to see who is available," he said. "We talk to lots of clubs to see which players might come available and at which point in time, in order for us to consider whether we may be interested in signing them."
But he stresses that just because he enquires about a player does not mean Wigan would be making an offer.

That was a quote from IL from one of the rags that print all the rubbish going round,
If he was'nt looking into the market people would moan, so it's the same old story. he can't win can he?.
as far as i'm concerned IL was looking at the market to see who is available for next year (2009), lets say if Peacock was out of contract next season and lets say Coley was out of contract, would you like IL to pursue peacock if we could afford him and release Coley? i think the answer is yes.
The fact of the matter is we don't know how many players he has enquired about for next season and beyond.

True, but there's a difference between making a general sort of enquiry, and suggesting a deal involving offering players in exchange. That's not something I would think he would be already thinking about for next year when this season hasn't even started yet. That only makes sense for a quick transaction, not one for 12 months down the line.

I don't think it's the first time Wigan have been involved in discussions about swapping players or sending players out on loan without talking to the players first, I seem to remember (I think it was) Darryl Goulding being offered to Huddersfield the season before last but he only found out from reading in the media that Huddersfield had already had enough of our cast-offs that season whilst we desperately tried to free up salary cap space for Stuart Fielden.

My line of though. It is well known that Higham's asthma prevents him from playing substantial parts of a match. This renders McIllorrum's placement on the bench a necessity. Considering he is worryingly short of experience, and as such could become a liability in pressure situations. Moves in the market could not be ruled out.

It is a serious problem to have two first team (Feka), first choice players who can rarely play more than half a game. Hence Nobles (apparent) attempt for a player who can give more than a "sideshow" performance.

As for the merits, I never regard players returning to their former clubs as a good career move - Betts anyone?!

But I do believe that Higham's contract will not be renewed (as per God's post), and Wigan will look for either a first choice replacement or a reasonable understudy to McIllorrum for next season.

Except that Bradford don't use Newton as their sole hooker anymore either, he's been interchanging with Henderson for the last couple of years, and will do so with Wagga this year. Perhaps as an ex-hooker himself, Nobby seems to like to swap his hookers to try and put something different into the game, and I don't see that would have changed had Newton come back to Wigan, I think we would still have had a second hooker on the bench as well.

Although I do agree to some extent that having such players does weaken our bench. We have lots of forwards, but no reserve backs to perhaps try and inject a bit of extra pace when the opposition gets tired.

dawbz your spot on ,wigan as well as all the other clubs need to know who is or who isn,t coming available ,and just because highams name was mentioned in the conversation 2+2 becomes 5 and so on ,the only other thing is that a certain bradford official rung up all the rugby journalists in the northern hemisphere to plant the seed ,imo to embarrass il, thats what my man says.

Only reason he didn't get it was player power at Leeds certain players who did not get picked or played under him at international level through the toys out , he did apply
