Somehow I can't see this thread lasting very long... which is why we don't really encourage discussions about football on here. They almost always end up descending into this kind of bickering.

What amazes me is how many people don't even want it discussed. It's like the visible, week-by-week decline of Wigan Athletic - a Premiership football club, for Heaven's sake - is of no importance at all to a Wigan sports message-board!Fraggle posted:

Are they serious?
I'm no Latics fan, but let's face reality. In a few years time they may well be down the divisions, but at present they're in the top flight and can't just be ignored. I can only assume those who want to lock this kind of thread have one of two motives. They're either diehard rugby fans, so blinkered they won't even acknowledge that Dave Whelan's football experiment ever happened in Wigan. Or they're diehard football fans, so blinkered they won't acknowledge that it was only an experiment. Either way, heads need to be pulled out of asses.
For those interested in open discussion, the question remains unanswered: why did Wigan Athletic get a plumb draw in the fourth round of the FA Cup - glamour club Chelsea at home - and only 14,000 people attend? I find it astonishing.
Is it that Wiganers are totally parochial and have no interest in the wider world of sport? Or is it that, having being exposed to real sport for the last 100 years, they refuse to buy into football's great lie (i.e. that it's more entertaining than anything else)?
And if you don't want to discuss it, don't try to stop everyone else doing it. Just don't join in.
Re: 14,000!!!!
Part of the problem could be that it was on TV. I know a season ticket holder (family ticket) for the latics who said TV + late time + more money = stay at homeCruncher posted:What amazes me is how many people don't even want it discussed. Re: 14,000!!!!
I'm agreed with you here to be honest, even I went to the game (being a football fan, I went since Stockport County (my team) had no game and the tickets were cheap)... I'm amazed that so-called real Latics fans didn't turn up to watch one of their biggest games of the season despite the reduced prices. And I would say that there were between 3 and 4 thousand Chelsea fans (not forgetting that they had a midweek trip to Everton previously and Latics would hardly be their biggest game), which makes around 10,000 home fans... quite pathetic when you consider we get 14,000 on against Catalans and Harlequins, who bring around 100 fans apiece.Cruncher posted:What amazes me is how many people don't even want it discussed. In all honesty I think it's just a bandwagon thing, the novelty is wearing off now, more and more people just can't be bothered, and there were a lot of season ticket holders during their initial seasons in the Prem who just went to watch Premiership teams rather than support Latics, and now they've all got bored.
Oh well, they'll be back below Stockport soon (who, I'm going to add, have been a bigger club than Latics for years)!
