I support Arsenal since the late 80s, and dislike Wigan because they are rivals.

I just follow everything Wigan based and hope they all do well. I even use to read stuff about Wigan Wasps in their heyday. However, I prefer to watch quality and for that reason I tend to watch Man U if given a choice although I still take a huge interest in the Latics. For the same reason I come from a footballing family but we watched RL more because the amount of entertainment in say any 5 minutes was that much greater.
As for the rivalry. Unfortunately, a hardcore of Latics fanatics are to blame for the venom. I came onto net boards when Wigan RLFC had their own board and when Paperdragon had one and Mike too. The abuse hurled at Nitsua (A very elderly female Wigan RLFC fan) was vile whilst the same Latics fans deliberately destroyed the Wigan RLFC message board by spamming it with pornography etc.

you cant say the rugby generates more revenue when the prem clubs get 25milolion a year tv rights. we dont get that as a league in total.

Posted on this matter a few times . I supported both teams as a kid saw the RL team relegated and saw latics go up from non league . I continued to watch both although even as a kid my dad got called for watching the rugby ''fact'' .
As I became older it was the relegation season that sealed my love for the game and team I still follow, but I still watched results and latics were my football team.
This continued until people who had never asked or showed an interest in my team suddenly took an interest (taking the micky) This may be personal to me but several of them had spent most of there lives walking around with football teams colours (Man U , Liverpool mostly hangers on) now with Latics shirts they gave me the town is turning blue some with a hatred look
Its this what now makes me not look at results and unfortunately not care for a team I both watched and supported a lot longer and more than they them selves have .

People living in the North West / especially in Wigan rarely had a particular club allegiance. For decades, they went from ground to ground watching PLAYERS. So Wiganers would go to Preston to see Finney, Blackpool to see Matthews and so on. Indeed that is the reason why so many Wiganers eventually became supporters of Manchester or Merseyside clubs.
Rivalry did not exist
When Wigan Athletic joined the league they were supported by Wiganers. I was there sunshine through the early league years. To give an example of how sad I am I went watching testimonials and the best shot ever seen at Springfield was by Bobby Charlton v a Scandinavian team. Crowds were great because Wiganers supported anything Wigan just like I do. Hooliganism was creeping in. I stood on Springfield whilst away fans hurled bricks from what was a crazy away end. Remember watching one set of fans make a mud slide and slide down it in one match.
The hooligan crew did not discriminate though then. They attended football / rugby.
Whether Latics fans want to accept it or not. When Wigan RLFC sunk to Div 2 and so on they did not use it to fuel a rivalry. That is the key difference. When things went pear shaped for the Latics and they could not even sell the club. I remember if nearly being sold to Jame, Port Petroleum for a ridiculously low amount. THINGS CHANGED.

Football will always be bigger than rugby league. So the argument in that direction is a non starter. However, the lesson to be learned is how dependent football is on the big clubs to generate income.

I wasd just agreeing that both set of supporters have equually ridiculous reasons and in their eyes 'valid' reasons for this feud.
