Colburn

Post by Webby1971 »

I hate to criticise young players but I'm afraid my patience has run out with Liam Colburn, he is so nervy in defence and if we stick with him the opposition will pepper him, I also cannot see what he gives us in attack?? Yeah he's scored a few tries but to be honest my 11 year old daughter could have scored them, does he ever beat a man, could you see him running the length of the field? I dont think so. He needs to to dropped to the reserves for the time being but for some reason his face seems to fit with Nobby and I see he's in the 19 man squad for KR and will no doubt start. Why has Shaun Ainscough not been given a run, he had a good pre season, does that count for nothing?

I wish I could say otherwise but I cannot

Stanton and Ainscough need an opportunity.

Colbon is never going to be a superstar but he is not a bad player. He made some obvious mistakes against Saints after he was moved into a position he hasn't play in for years.

I would say that it is unfair to single out Colbon as under performing since none of the 'big' players are pulling their weight. When he is playing on the wing he hardly ever sees the ball since the centres have the inability to pass but he always comes in field to drive the ball in when the props are doing nothing so there is defiantly no lack of effort from the lad.

Dropping Colbon and brining in Stanton or Ainscough will make no difference to the team if the rest of the players aren't doing their job, as a winger you rely on people making space.

As a side note, when Colbon was just breaking into the first team he was considered one of the fasted players in the squad so what has happened to his pace??

Defiantly agree, some of the players in the squad are being let down by the performances of those around them especially the younger players.

Kyle Eastmond looked a very good player in a good Saints side but if he was playing for Wigan he would have looked like a cabbage because he would have nothing to work with.

Also people seem to forget that Goulding, as well as Colbon, was out of position for most of the match. He has hardly ever played wing and showed against Saints that he is not a winger. People are criticising his defence and positioning but its bound to be poor because he has hardly played there. He has been one of the better players this season and has been as sound as Carmont defensively, if not more so, all season. He has hardly got a pass all season and has still scored 5 tries. As God says any Super League side would want to sign him. No wonder our young players leave.

Liam Colbon is a good prospect as is Goulding ,no blame whatsoever on friday in my opinion. These players need the likes of Barrett Luiliea and Higham to inspire the team and a coach who was clueless with his tactics on friday to be better prepared!

The dilemna is this. Is Colbon the real deal and is he potentially better/worse than Stanton and Ainscough. I believe Colbon is a nervous player and consequently he makes mistakes. With ball in hand can he beat an opposing outside back? No very often if at all. Does he have startling pace? No In fact the best I have seen Colbon play is at loose forward for the academy.

Colbon is intelligent and talented away from the rugby field. Maybe he would be better pursuing such options and possibly playing part time.

Stanton and Ainscough who are both very ordinary in terms of intelligence etc are IMO much better prospects as RL players. Neither will ever earn as much as Colbon can if he uses his true talents.
