Riversiders meeting last night

Post by Nine »

We had a cracking meeting last night at Riversiders. Here’s a few notes for those who couldn’t attend. To be honest the anecdotes and the banter were flowing so thick and fast it’s hard to remember most of it, so contributions from others who were there will be welcome!

The guests were four generations of Wiganers there to talk about playing for the club: Billy Boston, Bill Ashurst, Shaun Wane and Sean O’Loughlin. Yes, I know Billy came from Wales but all the rest of us have accepted him as a proper Wiganer by now – with the exception of Bill Ashurst, who insists he’s still just a “Taffy”.

The discussions were wide-ranging, including getting all four to summarise how they started playing rugby and how they progressed to the stage where they signed for the club. Billy reminded us of the true tale of how he didn’t want to come to Wigan and his Mum said she’d get shut of the directors who visited their home to tempt him North by asking for sully money. Trouble was, the Wigan directors agreed! Billy says it was the best mistake he’s ever made. He also revealed he was so scared when he was driven towards central park that first time to see posters says “Billy Boston playing today” he asked them to turn the car around and drive away. As we all know, he managed to make a success of it all!

Anyone who has ever been to a Riversiders meeting or other occasion involved Bill Ashurst will know that the bloke has a fund of anecdotes – all of them hilarious. The discussions last night turned to refs, given the current carry-on in Super League, and Bill told a tale of the famous “Sergeant-Major” Eric Clay. Legendary jack-of-all-trades at Wigan, Keith Mills, was still playing in those days and though he was mainly an A-teamer he got a go in the first team on this occasion. Bill says Keith gave somebody “a slap” and was promptly called out by Clay. “What’s your name, lad?” asked Clay. “Keith Mills” said Keith. “Never heard of you,” said the Sergeant-Major…. “and no one else will have, either, if you ever do that on my pitch again!”

Talking of refs, Shaun as a coach and Sean as a current player had to be a bit PC about the modern-day refs, though both admitted that they wanted to see them use a bit more judgment on when to give technical penalties; but Billy and Bill could be a bit freer in their assessment. “Crap”, I think it was. They thought the refs were too egotistical – the game should be about what the players do not the refs, who seem to want to hog the limelight.

Speaking of which, the news that Saturday’s ref is Ganson was greeted with groans around the room.

All four guests were upbeat about prospects for that game and for the rest of the season. Sean and Shaun were both sure that the team will click and really make an impact. Billy and Bill’s assessment was the, while taking nothing away from Leeds as a very good team, they think the weather and state of the pitches at the moment suit Leeds’ forward power game down to the ground, and once pitches dry up Wigan, with faster more mobile forwards, will come into their own.

Sam Tomkins and Chris Tuson came along to the meeting as well, to claim their Man of the Match awards for recent game. Sam was MOM against Stains (I don't know, my typing! ) and Chris has won twice, for the games against Warrington and Wakefield.

TWO EYED WARRIOR wrote:Nine out of interest did anyone try and question lockers about being capatin at the meeting and was Fridays boreathon mentioned at all
No one asked about the captaincy. It seems to obsess some people on this board but it didn't cross anyone's mind as a mjaor issue last night, going by what I heard (i.e. the fact that it was never mentioned).

The boreathon was mentioned, and Sean said it was partly the conditions and partly the number of penalities and he felt sorry for the fans having to watch it. Incidentally, eh also said that we didnlt come out of that game with any more injuries, though he's not sure whether or not Trent will be back on Saturday.

To be honest it doesnt really matter who is captain.

In my amatuer team at u16s, i was not the captain accept for one game. However when i was the captain, i played the same, spoke to the players the same, encouraged etc the same i did when i wasnt captain.
Thats just the type of player i am. It doesnt matter if im captain or not, i just act like a leader on the pitch.

Now on the pitch, as where not on it and cant here everything, we dont really know who is calling the shots. We do understand that lockers should be talking under the posts.

People say barret should be captain, now if he is a born leader, then captain or not he should be talking on the pitch.
If he doesnt talk on the pitch now, then he isnt a natural leader and not good enough to be captain.

If andy farrel wasnt captain, do you think he wouldnt talk to the players ? He would definatly talk to the players etc because he is a natuaral leader.

I think Lockers is a good captian.

It ain't all about talking on the pitch.

JUST think for one minute we make Barrett captian (if he was fit)......

Hes game goes down about becasue he is trying to be a captain and a playmaker. That means we are screwed. Every1 as been going on about us being a one man team. As any one watch barrett closely in warm up? it is like he is in a world of his own. I know he as to get in the zone but he harldy talks to the team when they are warming up. A captain must be activly getting his team ready for the game not just himself. Barrett ain't getting any young and will be gone in 2 years what happens then?

Lockers needs time to grow in the role and develop. FAZ was not a brillent captain over night. Let lockers deal with the ref and motivating the team and let baz lead us round the pitch. The only thing i will say about lockers he needs to lead from the front. Half of the time the team gets warned and he will give the next pen away.

The two things lockers doesnt do enough of is talking to the team and taking the ball up when the going gets tough.

Any chance of getting back on thread instead of the usual locker knockers. It's been done to death

RE: The warm-up on Friday.

The forwards gathered in a circle at the end the warm-up for a few minutes. Leading the speaking was Phil Bailey with occasional shouts from McIlorum. Lockers kept his head down and didn't say a single word. Just a thought

I would have thought that was one thing that you couldn't accuse him of.

So your saying he does take the ball up when the going gets tough and talks to the team ?
