Huddersfield go West again!

Got something to discuss about RL in general? Then this is the place to post it.

Huddersfield go West again!

Post by butt monkey »

With their fifth signing in recent seasons of ex-West Tigers - Brett Hodgson (30)!

I would say that this is a bad signing - as he's 30 and won't be cheap; however as an alternative for Mathers he is probably quite good!

What is it with Huddersfield and West Tigers?!

He is also 30 and will not be cheap - in fact he has said as much in the article:

http://www.sportinglife.com/rugbyleague ... field.html
Brett Hodgson enthused about the Giants by saying
"It's been quite a drawn-out process. There was a period when there were not a lot of options.

"Because of the salary-cap factor in Australia, staying here is not really an option. We approached other NRL clubs but there is not a lot going because there are a ton of quality full-backs.

"There was a little bit of interest in the UK, not as much as last year, but you've got to take the opportunity when it knocks on your door."
Looks like he wants to win trophies at Huddersfield then! :)

He doesn't even mention the club by name - or anyone at it!

This is just the sort of signing we would have made previously. An Aussie player approaching the twilight of his career looking for a pension - and I am grateful that we have steered well clear of him.

At 30 his pace will start to slow and he will be more prone to injuries.

True, we are currently stuck with Mathers - however hopefully he is one of the players that IL is looking to replace

I would have loved to have got him last year, as a replacement for Ashton.

That's the point I'm making - In no part of the interview does it seem like Hodgson actually wants to leave the NRL. He is basically coming to the UK because he couldn't get a big enough contract in Oz and has managed to find a club that will give him the money he wants.

Usually when players sign for a new club they talk about their ambitions of helping the club win honours; or even about how good their fans are - not talk about "There was a period when there were not a lot of options"

It sounds like he wanted to stay in Australia but realised he could get a pension plan in the UK - and the Giants were daft enough to give it to him - best of luck to them.
