My View on the match

Post by gpartin »

Well done to the Wigan fans who made the journey, I only live 2 miles up the road so it was easy for me and I have to say I'd have been mightily annoyed if I travelled 120 miles to see such a disgraceful performance.

We had nothing in attack and even when we did get the ball we seemed intent on giving Hull KR possession stupid passes were being made even when we were winning the game 3 blatant forward passes for no apparent reason. Hock knocked on at the play the ball when we finally got the ball back after who knows how many sets of 6.

Everyone knows how much of an impact Feka can have when he runs on to the ball but for the most part he was stood flat and when he was stood in an attacking position he was getting missed out in the line. Coley played well but even from the start it seemed like we were missing a prop.

The highlight of the Wigan performance was the chase from kick offs, we were getting ROver's well back in their half but then missing silly tackles, I noticed Goulding miss a couple which gave Rovers loads of yards and Fielden made a few of his half hearted attempts where he goes down onto one knee and sticks his arm out. In attack things looked promising at first from Fielden (he even made a line break!!!) but then as soon as rovers got a bit of momentum it went downhill to his usual lack of effort.

Wigan looked unfit in the second half and looked tired and dejected as soon as they came on the field, its only the fact that Rovers' defence is amateurish that we scored at all. Barrett was trying things but nobody wanted the ball.

The substitution situation was a joke, Coley was knackered and needed a rest but was kept on, Feka was taken off having only touched the ball once.

The kicking game was crap, why the hell don't we go for 40/20's? We totally under estimated Chaz I'anson and kept kicking it straight to him and Dobson for some reason.

Overall a load of crap and 2 defeats by Saints and 1 by Leeds to come at the very least.

Rovers had not won for 6 games before today and we get the same old crap from Noble who needs to remember that we're not Bradford and we never will be. Saints will put 60 past us next week minimum, I'd love to be proved wrong but can't see it.

If its the only way to get rid of "One trick, living in the past" Noble then so be it

Stick to the game plan, stick to the game plan

Nobby believes flat attack = yards. He cannot contemplate that player goes forward, passes 2 yards before the defence, player goes forward, passes 2 yards before the defence or runs into gap could actually be better.

Defenders cannot target attackers / ball in hand before contact, less defenders in contact = better ball security, more yards, faster play of the ball. Instead, we have to try to catch the ball almost in contact or immediately prior to contact, we get dumped by gang tackles, we lost the ball, our players get tired.

Exactly, everything ends up looking like hospital passes, we did get tired, slow play the balls, mistakes at the play the ball surrendering possesion and giving them momentum.

Rovers' play the ball was twice as fast as ours throughout worst tactical display I have seen from Wigan in a long time. Worse than at Cas.

We seem to play at the perceived level of the team we're playing (except against Saints) if that makes sense. Typical of a team with lots of Aussies IMO.

To be fair I dont think anyone expected Rovers to be so quick at the PTB or when we played the ball. Hindsight is a wonderful thing I guess but Rovers were pretty impressive at times.

Is that the first time HKR have been quick at the PTB this season? I have no idea but it seems to me a bit of research and foresight might have prepared the team a bit better. I am sure they aren't the only side with a quick PTB so if we could not cope why on earth not?

A team with several key players out injured for the season and on a losing streak outplayed us at the play the ball? What does that say about us?

If they looked impressive at times it just goes to show how far we have fallen. There is no way a team with HKR's record, squad and injury situation should be remotely impressive against a side at virtual full strength and with supposed play off ambitions. I don't know about hindsight but a bit of foresight is sorely needed at Wigan at the moment.

I suppose the fact Noble was impressed by an Aussie reject scrum half and a a 40 odd year old player sums up how good we are. Reading Noble's comments its as if all it was is that we got beat by the better side and that all there is too it. No acknowledgement it was a patched up team against a virtually full strength Wigan side or the fact this result finally killed any slight chance of third in the league stone dead.
