The Colbon Try

Having seen it now I do not see how the decision to award no try and a knock on scrum feed to Cats was even awarded. For those who have not seen it.

Tommy puts a grubber in and then the Cats player knocks on, it is a technical knock on because the ball then hits Colbon in the upper leg / knee area. If you then rule that the ball touches a Cats player before Colbon regathers to score the worst result should be double knock on, scrum feed to Wigan.

As it stands it seems nigh impossible to say if the ball touched a Cats player before Colbon regathers and scored. He definetly touched down. On that basis a benefit of the doubt try should have been awarded.

This is not down to Ganson BTW, video referee decision.

I agree looked at it several times and seen nothing wrong with it , after saying that I saw nothing wrong in the Bosc try which was disallowed , perhaps the video ref was evening up his wrong decisions up

I thought the nearly try when Mathers dropped the bomb should have been a penalty for not contesting the ball whilst a player was in theair.

I know the rule states that if you loose the ball going forard and it hits an opposing player its deemed a knock-on

Now cast your mind back a while semi-tadulala scored a try for bradford where he jumped to catch a high ball it bounced off him went forward but he regathered before it hit either the floor or a player and was deemed an ok try.

So heres the question.

If you can loose the ball forward but as long as you regather its not a knock on whats to stop you throwing the ball forward over the defensive line and regathering before it hits the floor? like an up and under but it would obviously be a lot easier to control or would this be deemed a forward pass to yourself? and can such an infringment be given?

= technical knock on with the ball not having to hit the ground.

You are not allowed to deliberately propell the ball forward and regather it. Decades ago, a player used to run at the defence throw the ball over them and regather it on the other side and break away. Hence, they brought the rule in. You are allowed to juggle the ball in the act of trying to catch it BUT here is the grey area.

You cannot juggle it deliberately and thus it is open to interpretation.

Another irk IMO is when a player passes the ball so badly that his teammate cannot catch it so he sticks his boot out and the ball plays him and goes forward. This is play on but it annoys me as you gain an advantage from poor play.

Might as well have been after that decision to wipe out the Colbon try!!!!

What makes you think that, turf? I'm interested as there isn't a VR listed on the RFL appointments page.

The ironical thing is that if there had been no video ref both Bosc's try and Colbon would have been ok.
