Re: £1 million to Farrell
what i dont agree with is that the rfu is paying for him. it osnt fair and will drive all the decent players out of our game :exc:
the rfl could never compete with anything as high as that

but that old saying money talks and it always will, if we heighten the international game more sponsors would be throwing money at the rfl they might be able to do the same thing as union or that i hear the aussie are planning to do is hold some of the money that international/state of origin players earn from these games like a sort of pension and if a player goes to rugby union they lose this pension.

That is correct the NRL in Australia are setting up such a scheme.heydude posted:

As to this whole Farrell saga I think the way ML and DW have handled it is appalling.
He is (was!) a contracted Wigan player and they have both stated they would rather have the player than the cash. Carney was held to his contract so all this he has acheived it all, great servant rubbish is just that IMO. Rubbish. The team comes first not the interests of individual players or that is how ML and DW should be thinking. Farrell should have been told to honour his contract on day one and that would have been the end of that.
The team clearly needs his services when back fit and now a post on RLFANS says the Wigan Observer states Wigan are only going to get £250K not £400K and DW is happy with it.
Wigan could have got more than that selling him to another RL club given the likes of Gleeson went for £200K.
If the £250K figure is correct Wigan and DW have been well and truly shafted by the RFU. Despite DW saying he would pull the plug on the deal over a week ago if not concluded he didn't. He let the RFU continue to set the timetable.
Wigan have been paying Farrell all this time so it counts on the salary cap.
The £250K doesn't even equate to buying out his remaining contract. Sure Wigan save his wages but they will have to spend them again to get much needed replacements so all in all £250K for losing the games best player is NOT a good deal in my book.

1 million equates to 30 pieces of silver.

"I hope he gets injured, and takes their cash without contributing anything to the enemy."
What an awful thing to say. Faz has been a tremendous servant to Wigan. He is only doing what the majority of us would. He is looking to the security of his family in the future. If someone offered you that sort of money wouldn't you go?
Good luck to the lad and thanks for the memories.
I just wish that they would get on with it - it must surely be unsettling for the rest of the team with this hanging over them.
We need to draw a line under this now and get on and look to spending the money wisely to replace him.

Well I wouldn't wish injury on a player either but what riles me is the seeming complete lack of any attempt by ML or DW to persuade Farrell to stay even though they were within their rights just to tell him to see his contract out.Red Hot Mama posted:

The telegraph may say he is getting a million quid for three years but that does not mean it is true.
Even if it is, that also does not mean an offer from Wigan would not have tempted him to stay.
As soon as this blew up people began to say he was past it or words to that effect which given how he played last season was IMO, just a defensive reation to something people didn't want to hear. It can't have been based on what people saw from him last season.
Farrell has plenty of RL left in him. We sign older less gifted players from Australia these days.
Don't hold your breath over any new signings. Our recent attempts to sign top class players such as Gasnier have failed. We even missed Vinnie Anderson who went to Saints while we tried to persuade London to let a player go.I just wish that they would get on with it - it must surely be unsettling for the rest of the team with this hanging over them.

If the figure of £250K is all Wigan will get from the RFU then that won't buy a player of comparable class. Gleeson went to Wire for £200K so that gives you an idea of the sort of cash needed to prise someone of Farrell's ability away from their club. Saints would laugh at us if we offered £250K to them for Paul Sculthorpe.

Which is why I reckon Wigan could have persuaded Farrell to stay without necessarily matching the reported offer from RU. Itis not only money that motivates players.WiganWarrior posted:Vanikolo has just snubbed Union and stayed at Bradford for less money than he was offered to gowhat i dont agree with is that the rfu is paying for him. it osnt fair and will drive all the decent players out of our game

Vanikolo could have walked away free at the end of the season as he was out of contract. We on the other hand are letting a contracted player walk away for peanuts with no replacement in sight.

In other word we get rock all, you could'nt even buy back Robinson for £100,000.
If he does get injured I for one would'nt shed a tear,my prediction, probably won't play more than 20 games for Sarecens, and none for England RU before he is forced to retire, due to his wallet scrapping the floor and doing irrepairable damage to his ego !
Bloody good ridance Andy you've ruined our season !!!!
