That doesn't make sense. If that were the case they would charge for cash & cheques (because it costs them more) and credit card & debit cards would be free (because that is cheaper for them). I think because more people pay by credit and debit cards they can make more out of usDaveO wrote:It is a complete rip off.ancientnloyal wrote:Doesnt all Direct Debit services have the same ethos? you always end up paying more than the original price because payments are spread. IL isnt the problem nor the Wigan club. Be thankful you have the option to spread payment.
Companies like to minimise the cost of handling the transaction. The cheapest way for you to pay them is via debit card or direct debit.
Handling cash or cheques cost them money. Credit cards incur a higher cost to Wigan as the credit card companies take a percentage.
There should be no fee at all for the debit card route. Most companies that do charge for allowing you to use a credit card will not do so for a debit card (e.g. Ikea).
Charging a fee per ticket paid via debit or credit card is also an outrageous rip off especially for the cheaper tickets because as a percentage it becomes very high as it is a fixed fee.
As to the direct debit route and spreading the cost then direct debits are very cheap to process as it's all computerised and so I think the amount of interest they charge (that is basically what they are doing) more than covers the loss of interest they would earn if you paid a one off up front payment.
In other words, its another rip off.
If you want to spread the cost the best way to do it is get yourself a new credit card with a 6 month interest free period and but the ticket on that. The transaction charge is a darn sight less than the amount you pay for the privilege of making Wigan's banking costs cheaper with the direct debit option!
For those of us whop travel it's got to to be debit or credit card payments as it isn't worth the petrol to drive to the ground to pay cash or cheque.
It's just a rip off from start to finish.

In fact its quite unusual that Wigan can do this because most companies that agree to take card payments are forbidden from passing on the fees they are charged for card transactions by the terms of their agreement.
That is why when you pay by cash or cheque in a shop the price is no different than if you pay by credit card.
Credit card payments are the most expensive for the retailer as they receive less of money you spend than if you paid by other means.
So in that sense Wigan are justified in charging a fee for credit card payments if they can get away with it BUT not for each ticket. That is just unfair.
The cost of shovelling paper cheques or coin/notes around is a manual labour intensive process which requires people to balance the books etc. That costs money and also banks charge more for a business to bank a cheque than they do to process a debit card payment for similar reasons.
It costs Wigan RL nothing like the fees they are charging for debit card payments.
I am not sure but it's probably illegal to try and charge a fee to a customer to pay by cash (being asked to pay more because you are paying with the legal tender of the country is a bit of a bizarre concept) or cheque and you are doing the retailer a favour if you pay by debit card.

Re: I FEEL RIPPED OFF
I told customers the charge for credit card use. The customer must be advised verbally and the charge must be indicated in avertising and displayed in the premises. The percentage to the business is usually 2.5% so if the transaction is over 100 the company is stil getting hit. Probably the charge per seat is because of the amount being higher. Some just blanket charge 2.5 of the total. To be honest I used it as a marketing tool to get people to use debit cards. The credit card charge makes the company look bad but they actually make nothing from the transaction or may loose. What seems to e happening here( I don't know the figures) the credit card transactions are running at a loss and the debit cards are making up for it. The answer if you must use a card is use use credit card only. At least then you get what you pay for. Jim

I have never been able to get a credit card and I have no idea why, never had a problem with loans, mortgage, overdrafts but not credit card for some reason.highland convert wrote:I told customers the charge for credit card use. So did you charge less for debit card purchases?highland convert wrote:I told customers the charge for credit card use. Most high street shops do not set a different price but if you look at the receipt for a credit card purchase it will tell you about the 2.5% charge and say something like you (the customer) agree to pay it when in fact its the retailer paying (if they charge the same price for other forms of payment).
Not sure what the cheapest season ticket price is but the fee is fixed per ticket so for the lower priced tickets it can't be justified on the higher price anyway.
I never pay by debit card if I can avoid it because you just don't get the kind of purchase protection you get with a credit card. The credit card charge makes the company look bad but they actually make nothing from the transaction or may loose. Re: I FEEL RIPPED OFF
The debit charge was free the credit charge £1.00 on all transactions in the main account using the scheme. The average bill was 25-50 pound with a turnover of 13,000 in the 5 month season. Wih a net profit 0f 30% without the charge the £3,700 would have been would have been considerably reduced. What is seldom appriciated that 2.5% of total come off the profit which in some cases is as low as 10% in high turnover sales. That would read 25% of profit in card charges plus machine rental. Bank charges are a killer. Jim
Re: I FEEL RIPPED OFF
Go to the Stadium and pay in cash. No charge, simple.
Re: I FEEL RIPPED OFF
Errm, not everybody who is is season ticket holder lives in Wigan. Have you seen the price of petrol lately? It would cost me more to do as you suggest than pay the surcharge.Dubs wrote:Go to the Stadium and pay in cash. No charge, simple.
It's either cheque by post as Mike pointed out or pay the surcharge.
