Oh Shenton is the only other decent English centre. I bet that made Goulding feel good too or if we wanted to sign Yeoman, the lad at Wakey, watkins from Leeds I bet they would be impressed.
Prefers to sign English players than Aussies too. Obviously, identifying the best players in the NRL is much harder work, too much for IL.
No hope for Goulding
Re: No hope for Goulding
Just listened too it. Yes Goulding was not mentioned but Phelps got a mention by IL along with Carmont in the context of players brought in at short notice to do a job for us. Not with IL rhyming off a list of players.cpwigan wrote:http://www.wiganwarriors.com/news_full.asp?newsid=4667
Every man and his dog mentioned/heralded by Ian Lenagan minus 1, D.Goulding. Even Mathers received plaudits.
Move on Mr Goulding, you are fighting a losing battle at Wigan RLFC IMO.
Mathers got mentioned because he's just left and IL was asked a direct question about him.
It's a pity the interviewer did not ask about Goulding but the conversation just went the way it did.
Also he didn't say Tomkins had been filling in at 6 as if he was about to get the boot from the first team with is what your summary seems to imply.
Goulding's face may well not fit with Noble and the best thing is for him may be to go on loan for the rest of this season.
I think you are reading something into this that may not be there.

Oh I forgot an amazing deal in the credit crunch

It was the interviewer who came up with that line!cpwigan wrote:Oh I forgot an amazing deal in the credit crunch![]()

Did he actually say he would not pay big transfer fees or did he say he would not pay unreasonable transfer fees?cpwigan wrote:IIRC
IL singing the praises of Gleeson as an English / Wiganer RL player. Always on our list. Opportunity through change of coach became available. The fans are deluded in believing that we will not pay big transfer fees (Sorry Mr Lenagan but you told me and 499 other Wiganers that you would not do so at the last forum)

No he said he would not pay big transfer fees. He did not want to pay one for Gleeson. Note Lenagan did not quote the 100K that other people presume. He talk 6 figure.DaveO wrote:Did he actually say he would not pay big transfer fees or did he say he would not pay unreasonable transfer fees?cpwigan wrote:IIRC

Also transfer cost spread over the duration of Gleeson’s contract. So for all members of the happy club, Alex maybe Wigan are funding the tranfer over 3 seasons not IL fom his own cheque book.
If that is the caseDave, we cannot pay more than we are doing and not too often. Remember, show the faith spend your money turn up.

Interviewer - Great centre combination with George, SL Dream Team Centre in 2008
IL – As far as the squad is concerned with Martin there you are correct, the dream team centre last year in George Carmont together with a strike centre like Martin gives us a centre piece that we need. There is also the added advantage that Martin can also play 6 which is a big advantage this season with the absence of Trent Barrett obviously, even though Sam Tomkins is coming through very well. Martin gives us the maturity, the talking, the strikeability. If you couple that with AmosRobets whose wife and kids who arrived this week and Amos is a much happier man for that and a much more positive and outgoing character because he has been missing his kids, including his young kiddie who was only born a month before he set off for England. You take Amos, you take Shaun Ainscough, you take Karl Pryce, and Pat whether at fullback or wing. That is a much better threequarter line and fullback and halfback structure than Wigan have had for a long time.
Interviewer - Just one signing and the whole ¾ line takes a different and much better look.
IL - I think we said 18 month this is a gradual and long term process and we have had to do some infilling and that reminds of course I missed out Cameron Phelps there primarily because he has been out injured but he is back from injury now. People like George and Cameron we brought in a short notice to fill gaps. They have proven, particularly in George’s case to be even more special than we though at the time. I think Wigan is in a good position now in terms of 3/4s. how long ago is it since a wingman scored the try that Amos Roberts did last weekend where he flashed down the wing and dived in the corner on the back of good ¾ play. That is what I want to see played at Wigan. The excitement of Ainscough on the other wing is rather special as well I think.
Interviewer - Mouth watering prospect looking at those, the main 4 that you mentioned. Richie Mathers move, never paid of for us and going back to his mentor in Tony Smith at Warrington.
Dave the interviewer pre empted Gleeson and George nobody else. There was a large section before IL mentioned Gleeson and George. Everybody else was suggested by IL not the interviewer. Tim Sith and Gould omitted. I believe the club see Tommy and Tommy sees himself as a 9. He even forgot and then added Phelps. Sorry but the writing is on the wall for goulding based on that interview.IL - Richard Mathers is a very nice man, a very enthusiastic man, he’s been a particularly talented player in his Leeds days but over the last 2 years or so with his knee problems and recent problems in terms of being sent off and injuries he’s not had too much good luck has he you have got to say and that has affected his performances on the field. One has to say I am actually quite reluctant to for him to go because Richard again in the medium term would have come back to the talent he showed previously
Re: No hope for Goulding
On the plus side, it also appears that the writing is on the wall for Tim Smith!
The end of this season will be very interesting - as IIRC a lot of player's contracts are up for renewal and obviously Noble's is too.

Interviewer: So that obviously means that you're not going to St Helens and you're not going to Leeds?
Frano: I don't know why I would ever want to go to St Helens or Leeds

Re: No hope for Goulding
I'm with DaveO on this one. I'm sorry CP but you seem to be gleening parts from the interview and adding your own opinions, to give the impression that everything Lenegan says is a lie and that our club is a total ruin (that's just my opinion BTW). Whether this is a concious intention of yours or not, I don't know. But that's certainly how it's coming across.
Despite what you may believe, you don't know everything that is going on at the club and I doubt that you are as "in" with the playing squad as you make out, based on some of the comments that you make in your posts.
Granted, your posts are well constructed and are often written with an obvious great knowledge of the game and our club. But sometimes you try and get you point across in a manner that some of our younger, more immature, or less intellectual posters would see as being the gospel.
Personally, I'm happy with the signing of Gleeson, especailly as we've managed to offload Mathers to boot. However, I am sure that Lenegan was answering the questions in a reasonably honest manner and that his ommission of Goulding from his comments was in line with the fact that he was talking about players who we had brought in to the club at short notice. It's my opnion that only someone looking to pick at the bones of the interview, would deem most of his comments to be inaccurate. Don't forget, he probably didn't have answers prepared for the interview questions and was talking off the top of his head, it's very easy to pick at things when you're listening to it in the comfort of your own home, and when you've got time to, possibly, read into something that isn't there.
