Will K.Pryce ever be fit enough?

Post by ancientnloyal »

Been reading the pre-Wakefield game threads. They have many topics interlaced within it. An interesting one is Karl Pryce. Thought a seperate thread would be ok.

It seems most professional athletes have injuries, some may be out for years and come back. This season Karl has had plenty of time to be match fit along with the training each week yet he still seems to be below par. Tonight we've seen a young wigan #3 score twice for salford whilst tomorrow Noble will juggle our squad due to a possible Carmont injury.

How much more time, if any, does KP need? It cant be a conditioning fault more a coaching fault if not his own. I fear he's just dead wood with no confidence who came with reputation as a junior at Bradford and is now a flop. His injury isnt/wasnt too serious most people recover fine.

i think the fact that he was brought back to fast from union has ruined this player.
his confidence is obviously low and is beign shown in his performance.
if he is to have a future at wigan he needs to start performing
RIP mike you will always be remembered

Moving to Union when he did was clearly a mistake. Obviously he benefitted financially. Will he ever be fit enough? Well it strikes me it is down to A) KP and B) Wigan RLFC. I know from watching St George in the NRL that in one pre season Wayne Bennett and his coaching team have transformed several players physically.

KP has had far more money out Wigan RLFC than the club will ever let on BTW.

Karl played today for the reserves and was injured :conf:
Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Whilst Karl Pryce has a major responsibilty to himself and his career, there is also a major underlying conditioning problem at Wigan.

When we signed Inga, he was in worse physical shape than KP. We simply made him run up and down Rivington and turned him into a world beater. Even before we signed Pryce it was blatantly obvious that fitness wise we have problems. It is several months ago that IL stated at a fans forum that Forshaw couldn't do the job on his own. What have done since then to improve our conditioning team? NOTHING.

The most frustrating part of this to me is that before every game, I see one of the world's highest regarded fitness instructors waiting to take his seat - Steve Hampson. He is Wigan through and through. He pays to watch them play, so imagine how much he would like to work with them. World famous sports stars like Freddie Flintoff and Darren Clarke have selected him as their personal fitness tutors. Surely this says something about the reputation he has.

If our chairman thought Mike Forshaw couldn't do this job alone months and months ago, then why is he still working alone?
I thought Karl Pryce was a good signing for us, deep down I think most people on here had quite high expectations and thought he would be a prominent feature in the first team this year, hence the sponsorship. Unfortunately, there is no sign of progress with Karl, and time and patience are running out, especially if his development is coming at the expense of Shaun Ainscoughs'.
“Usually the fans that abuse players like Sam have never done anything of any note themselves. They’re nobodies, whose greatest claim to fame is abusing someone who has, and these so-called ‘Eddie the Experts’ pretend to their mates that they have."

Which it looks like if the last two weeks are anything to go by, i.e, dropping Ainscough for nothing.

Agreed. Not all ex-players make a good career in sports fitness but apparently Hampson has as did Perillini from Saints (who now I believe earns a small fortune in Dubai).

The fitness thing is one of those issues that many fans can see as a blindingly obvious problem the needs addressing. I am sure Noble would see far more from this squad of players if they were fitter.

I can remember Wigan employing Bill Hartley (ex international 400mm hurdler for those who don't know who I am about) and at the time Mo was quoted as saying he puts at least a yard of pace on all the players by improving their running technique. Not strength or leg muscle but technique.

One of the things that always made me feel good as a Wigan fan was the knowledge we were a progressive club on and off the field when it came to the players. Yes we recruited the best but we made the players we employed BETTER players.

Can anyone honestly say we do that now?

This is an interesting question. Is it because the money is not available to employ people to help him or is it because our coach is in charge and feels Forshaw is all he needs?

Who knows but it is yet another aspect of the club that is not right and more to the point not as good as it used to be.

I was quite happy for the club to take risks on Pryce and Mathers as well because I was under the impression money was tight. In Pryce's case it was a priority he was given whatever help was required to have the same effect running up Rivington had on Inga. Of course Pryce would need to buy into any such training regime and there is a question mark if he would do so. Inga certainly had a professionalism about him that made it obvious he was going to do what the club asked but I get the impression with Pryce both parties are guilty, the club and the player for not getting a bloke as big as him who can shift as he can running through defences with ease. Inga MkkII is what he should be.
