Stick from the Internet
I am an amateur referee in the northwest counties rugby league and after doing my best on Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings I used to come home and read the comments posted on the various club and league bulletin boards. This made the stick handed out to the proffessional Wigan players look pretty mild I had my fitness, my eyesight and even my parentage critiscised in the most vulgar and lurid manner. This used to worry me but I have found a way to solve this problem I no longer read the websites. I suggest the Wigan players and our chairman follow this advice and it will solve a lot of aggrevation. Like me the players will know when they've had a bad game and the last thing they need to do is to read all the gory details written by some abusive numpty they should get their heads down in training in the week and put matters right during the next game leaving the computer chit chat to the fans

Could not agree more. However, players have it easier than referees by a long way. Referees can never win no matter what they do and are the easiest target in the world because fans/coaches/parents will often defend their own players to the hilt but have no such loyalty to the referee who is the easiest target in the world.
Young Turf on here has just become a referee. Wigan refs society.

Good luck to you Turf - you're drinking from the poisoned chalice. We all need refs to enjoy the game and to put up with abuse and flak when you're doing something with the best of intentions and an honorable mind is tough.

True but that is what I have. Also I think a little bit of humour doesn't go amiss either.weststand-rich wrote:Good luck to you Turf - you're drinking from the poisoned chalice. I remember Mr Thaler in a season with Warrington v Leeds, "Lee, I'll be pedantic in a minute if you don't shut your gob".
Thanks for the good luck message by the way.
