Match Reaction Thread

I dont want to have a go too much as some of the team deserve credit for how they played today heres how i saw it:

Phelps:- Tried hard some nice attacking flair unlike some never gave in
Roberts:- Weak link, now im not saying that he could of done much about the tries conceeded but just doesn't offer anything in attack
Gleeson:- could of stuck a wire shirt on him, he did nothing in that match
Carmount:- Didn't play bad was good when he had the ball
Richards:- the left side doesn't get the service now hock left but ran the ball in strong
Tompkins:- if it wasn't for this fellow we'd have little to no attack nearly everything good comes from him
LuLu:- needs to help sam more or be replaced, Sam is being burdene as Lulu cannot offer the needed alternative in attack, a few good runs and a good try doesn't make a match
Prescott:- 2nd best prop today ran really strong club need to hold on to him
Riddell:- Played well i thought his passing was good and looked fitter again
Coley:- best prop on the pitch in my opinion was great today and really deserves some credit
Hansen:- Average
Bailey:- Went off early
Lockers:- Looked rusty didn't let himself down but was slightly out of sync with the team, i wander whether bringing him straight back was the right idea

Subs:
Flanagan:- Showed some good stuff today did well, could be a great player if he works hard
Feka:- Useless, not fit and cant defend and seems to have swapped brains with Coley as Coleys going straight and he's doing the crab now!
Tompkins:- Was better today than he has been recently played well
Feilden:- I only have a while so ill keep this as short as i can

TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!! every point scored by wigan when he was off the feild, every point (bar maybe the drop goal) Conceeded when he was on!!!!!. Worst moment when he drove it to one man tokk a step and just gave up and passed it to sam to take, im considering going down to wigan and picking a fight with him because if his performance is anything to go by a 5st girl could beat him up, im trying not to swear but its difficult he is the worst player in a wigan shirt and Ian Lenegan i hope your reading this and i hope your ashamed that you ever stuck up for him he is the worst prop in superleague!

Major problem as always we left ourselves far too much to do, story of our season, no silverware again.

Ainscough got dropped for making less mistakes than Roberts and IMO is more potent in attack.

Feka im a fan but have to agree he seems to have put a bit of weight on and did nothing today. He's turning into a luxary we cant afford.

Unfair on Fielden, he tried hard. A mistake by Noble to fetch a clearly not fit O'Loughlin back and disturb last weeks team. I thought that Flannagan was probably our second best player when he was on the field, I may have to change my mind on him, he looks like he has got some rugby nous.

i really fail to see what anyone see's in feilden, he makes literally no yardage as soon as he hits the defenders hes on the floor, he has no fire anymore, everyone is obviously entitled to their own opinion but i believe that even if you think he played ok you must admit he is not worth half of the money we are paying for him

Your right he has lost his go forward in a big way but in defense he is doing well. Yes your right again he is on to big a contract, but when we signed him he was one of the best forwards in the world and so attracted that high contract.

In my opinion it was deja vu from the semi against Catalan, therefore we don't seem to have learned how to deal with a match where it really matters.

We again gave the opposition far too big a lead to recover from, we again are left to watch another team get to Wembley.

In my opinion Nobby also made a mistake of dropping Mossop, we've done superbly operating with a virtual 5 prop system as we've tired the oppositions forwards (for example the Leeds home game).

Fair enough we got ourselves a few scores in the 2nd half but they should never have been so far in front in the 1st place. Poor 1st half has cost us a final yet again

From the threads, it seems to me that a real good coach (Smith), got one up on a no hoper, yet again.
He studied, got his information correct, and put it into a gameplan which worked.
Or so it appears.
My fear was Noble was not upto this, he has proven this to me.
No silverware, where do we go now.

Overall, our problem was after the decision to go for 2 we conceeded a try and our heads dropped and all confidence went out of the side for 30 minutes. Fortunately, warrington are as bad as us and so really tried hard to lose the game after half time. If we had been a bit better of a team, we would have been able to get in front - we blew as many chances as we took and Wire gave them all to us. We are just so fragile, and this has been our problem for years. That mental fragility and lack of belief has caused our inconsistency. We go on a good winning run, but just a couple of things going against us cause us to completely fold. LIke I said, wire as as bad as us for this so we got back into the game. The team need to respond to adversity in a positive way, but they feel the pressure, and it causes a drop in performance, getting them deeeper in the mire.

phelps - not too bad, apart from missing king completely. He does at least look like he's trying
roberts - why can't he catch near his own line - looks like he can need the opponents. To be fair King is tall and had a great run on him for his hattrick
gleeson - wasn't able to shore up the defence on that side, and wasn't involved in attack at all. One of his least effective matches for Wigan
carmont - solid when he had a chance.
patt - he's good isn't he. reliable and determined
sam - he's a kid - he'll make a few mistakes but he tried his heart out, no complaints from me
tommy - thought he did pretty good today, his try was a great piece of play, solid performer in general, maybe a few too many mistakes today though. he takes too much stick for me, he is a quality RL player
coley - top prop, great stuff. cut out the dropped balls and he'll go a long way
piggy - still not quite up to it IMO, has good spells but not dangerous around the PTB (which is where wire killed us when they were on their roll)
prescott - what an offload - the two props create their own try, great game
bailey - shame about the ankle
hansen - ok
lockers - tried hard, a bit rusty, faded in the second half understandably

fielden - ok, about average for him, got cleaned out by morley but dealt with it well. Its quite interesting that everyone expects him to become the player he once was overnight. its not going to happen. its no good moaning and complaining about him - we can't get rid until 2011 and we don't have anyone better right now due to injuries
feka - was unlucky that wire had the ball for his entire first spell. he weakens our defence. the coach should really deploy him in periods where we have the ball, not when the oppostion are getting at us. His worst game for a while, not effective in attack because he was knackered by the time he had a chance with the ball. Again, I don't understand the complaints that he is not a good defender, they are obviously true, but he has other strengths that the team has to get the most out of. again he's going nowhere until 2011.
flanagan - had a good cameo in the 2nd half. he looks like he'll be pretty good, but he's starting his first team career about 2-3 years behind his contemporaries so expect some errors for the next season or so.
tompkins - not bad, few errors, tried hard

long post for me.

we've got to sort out how the team deals with adversity. the players we have are good enough individuals for us to be a top 4 team. we just don't deal with the pressure like a top 4 team.

at least we won't lose to saints at wembley now though...

I watched the game on 'tele. My thoughts:
Briers was allowed to dictate play with his kicking. Should have been tackled the moment he got the ball.
It was obvious that Amos Roberts would be targeted by that big ..... .... Matt King. The question is: if we don't play him who else?
Very disappointed.
I just hope Huddersfield beat the Nasties tomorrow.
