Melbourne Storm are resigned to losing one of the cornerstones of their NRL premiership success - assistant coach Michael Maguire.

Head coach Craig Bellamy said Maguire was in the sights of English Super League club Wigan, who could secure him within days.

Maguire confirmed he had spoken with Wigan and would have further talks over the next week.

But he said he was by no means certain to secure the role, with arranging a suitable visa the most likely stumbling block.

"It's not a done deal - far from it," Maguire told AAP.

"There's still work to be done yet."

Brian Noble vacated the Wigan post at the weekend after four years, clearing the way for Maguire to step in.

Bellamy was more certain that his assistant would get the job - the Storm boss a long-time champion of Maguire's credentials for a head coaching role.

Bellamy has consistently expressed surprise that Maguire has not already been snapped up by a rival NRL club and all but implored Wigan to give Maguire the head coach's job he craved.

"I think Michael will certainly go if he gets a visa," Bellamy said.

"He has done a great job for us. He is a very talented coach and he thinks he is ready for a head coach's job and I think he is too.

"I'm not quite sure how the visa is going. That is what he wants to do and he'll certainly get the blessing from our club without a doubt."

Current Wigan reserves coach Shaun Wane, a former Warriors prop, is also in the running.

But he is more likely to be appointed Maguire's assistant should the Australian's visa arrangements go to plan.

Maguire set to take over

Aussie Michael Maguire is expected to be
confirmed as Wigan's new coach this week.
Warriors have called a press conference for Wednesday to announce the successor to Brian Noble, who departed after Saturday's 14-10 play-off semi-final defeat to Saints.

Maguire is an assistant coach at Melbourne Storm, who won their second Grand ADVERTISEMENTFinal in three years yesterday by beating Parramatta 23-16.

Storm officials were reluctant to discuss Maguire's link with Wigan. He and reserve team coach Shaun Wane have been the front-runners since it
became apparent that Noble would not be offered a new deal.

It is understood that Maguire initially had trouble securing a work visa, but has now been given the green light to take charge of Warriors – with Wane tipped to work as his assistant.

It is not clear whether the press conference has been deliberately timed for Wednesday to allow Maguire to fly over from Melbourne.
Lenagan would not reveal his new coach, preferring to pay tribute to departing Noble for his work at Wigan – even though his failure to land a trophy ultimately cost him his dream of extending his three-and-a-half year stay with the club.

"It's the fifth time in a row that Wigan have been in a semi-final and not got through to the final," said Lenagan.

"If you were a Wigan supporter, what would you feel? You'd be very disappointed.

"I thought it was a decent performance but I think we are capable of better. I think the squad that we have is capable of better performances."

Lenagan said he finalised his decision 'about three or four weeks ago'.

"From a business point of view you always have to plan ahead, it was my decision but the management board of Wigan were unanimous in the view
that now is the time for change," he said.

"There is no ignominy whatsoever in leaving at the end of your contract in the way that the St Helens coach Daniel Anderson did last year."
He added: "It has been a difficult decision not to offer Brian an extension to his current contract. Brian leaves with our best wishes for his future and our thanks for the professional way in which he has led the team and conducted himself."

KOOCH wrote:I really haven't a clue who will be head coach until Wednesday.Everything is pure speculation until it is announced. We have had umpteen posters saying it will be this man and that man and granted someone will have got the name correct and say told you so.But whoever it is I sincerely hope that we will give them an honeymoon period without going on the personal attack from the first.I for one have been guilty in the past for getting a little to personal about the character of a said Brian Noble.Let's just hope that if we do not get of to a flying start to next season we will be a little more understanding and forgiving until the new coach as bedded in.If after that things do not work out then we should be looking at the chairman for employing mediocrity once again. Also it is my wish that we see the new head coach bringing through our youth. We need players that are proud to be wearing the Wigan colours not players here for the money.Just as a foot note. What the F**k am I going to do with myself for the next few months?
You could watch some good old Rugby Union, KOOCH :)
