Storm assistant linked with English job
By Guy Hand and Todd Balym AAP Mon, 05 Oct 2009 19:49:51
Melbourne Storm are resigned to losing one of the cornerstones of their NRL premiership success - assistant coach Michael Maguire.
Head coach Craig Bellamy said Maguire was in the sights of English Super League club Wigan, who could secure him within days.
Maguire confirmed he had spoken with Wigan and would have further talks over the next week.
But he said he was by no means certain to secure the role, with arranging a suitable visa the most likely stumbling block.
"It's not a done deal - far from it," Maguire told AAP.
"There's still work to be done yet."
Brian Noble vacated the Wigan post at the weekend after four years, clearing the way for Maguire to step in.
Bellamy was more certain that his assistant would get the job - the Storm boss a long-time champion of Maguire's credentials for a head coaching role.
Bellamy has consistently expressed surprise that Maguire has not already been snapped up by a rival NRL club and all but implored Wigan to give Maguire the head coach's job he craved.
"I think Michael will certainly go if he gets a visa," Bellamy said.
"He has done a great job for us. He is a very talented coach and he thinks he is ready for a head coach's job and I think he is too.
"I'm not quite sure how the visa is going. That is what he wants to do and he'll certainly get the blessing from our club without a doubt."
Current Wigan reserves coach Shaun Wane, a former Warriors prop, is also in the running.
But he is more likely to be appointed Maguire's assistant should the Australian's visa arrangements go to plan.

Michael Maguire possible Wayne Bennett successor
Karl deKroo | February 06, 2008 11:00pm
CRAIG Bellamy is out of the running, but the man who helped him architect Melbourne's stunning recent success has emerged as a dark horse contender to replace Wayne Bennett at the Brisbane helm in 2009.
Michael Maguire is virtually unknown outside rugby league's inner sanctum, but the former Canberra Raiders utility has a growing reputation as an outstanding tactician and a first grade coach in waiting.
Bellamy remains the Broncos' No. 1 target to replace Bennett, but the premiership coach last night officially ruled himself out, adamant he would honour his contract with the Storm which doesn't expire until the end of 2009.
Brisbane chief executive Bruno Cullen has made it clear he will leave no stone unturned in the search for Bennett's successor – and Maguire is almost certain to come under consideration.
In a major boost to Maguire's prospects, he has earned a glowing endorsement from his current boss.
"I have no doubt Michael will be a head coach at some stage," Bellamy said last night.
"Whether it is now or in the future, he has all the traits required to be successful.
"I probably haven't given him the raps he deserves to be honest, but he is very important to what we do.
"He is extremely thorough, he is a very hard worker and extremely passionate about what he does. He is always looking to improve himself and looking for new or better ways to do things and he is good at getting his message across.
"I don't know how long an apprenticeship you need to serve these days. But he has a burning ambition to be a first grade coach and if he ever got offered a post I wouldn't stand in his way."
Maguire's playing career with the Raiders and Adelaide was cut short by a neck injury but after a brief stint as a physical education teacher in Canberra he has worked steadily building his coaching resume.
He coached junior sides in Canberra before serving as an assistant to Matthew Elliott. He then was recruited to Melbourne by Bellamy in 2005.
Asked last night if he felt he was ready to take on a senior post, Maguire, 34, said: "I'm in no hurry to leave Melbourne – I am here learning from the best in the business.
"But like any assistant coach I have an ambition to one day coach my own side. I feel I'm ready but that is ultimately up to others to decide."
Maguire serves as the Storm backs coach, with former Melbourne captain Stephen Kearney looking after the forwards.
Maguire has previously assumed the role of head coach when Bellamy has been away on Test and Country Origin duty and he will do likewise when the former Broncos assistant takes over as NSW Origin coach this season.
While Bellamy said he would not be a contender to replace Bennett in 2009, he stopped short of ruling out a return to Brisbane at some stage.
