Re: Paul Deacon - a good contract?
I posted this in the thread in the rumour mill
I cant see what deacon would bring, people have said he can mentor tomkins, but in fairness, tomkins is better now than deacon was at his best so really what can he learn from him. If you want to bring someone to mentor tomkins they have to be at the standard of trent barrett, darren lockyer, jonathan thurston. Tomikns is one of if not the best half back in superleague as his place in the dream team shows, deacon isn' a patch on him the only person he could possible help is lulu but even lulu is better than deacon

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure
Re: Deacon Confirmed
There are only two pots. The £1.6m pot that is divided up between a clubs 25 "1st tier" players and the £50K pot available for it's 2nd tier players.MrDave wrote:
Will he be on a pay-per-play contract like Richie Mathers was on and if so which salary cap fund does that come from.
Deacon would have to be on a pittance to fit into the 2nd tier so my guess whatever he is on, he will still be one of our 25 1st tier players.
Pay per play doesn't work because as soon as a player plays one single qualifying game his entire salary for the year counts against the cap.

Re: Deacon Confirmed. A good contract?
for a cover player he is one of the best
as a coach yet to be proven but his kicking and half back coaching will be very useful.
while Sam has been nothing short of amazing to say the least this year he was in the reserves at the start and i think he could benifit from Tommy and Deacon showing him a few more ropes, even if he doesnt need to learn much more a bit of input from Deacon cant do any harm can it

Re: Deacon Confirmed
Beaver is on £200,000 a year, Matt Orford, Glenn Hall and Heath L'estrange (and the aussie they signed whos name I cant remember right now), they are not gonna be over here on nothing. Makes you wonder how much they were paying Solomona, Morrison, (Tadulala - didnt he go to union?) Newton and Burgess
Wish list: Billy Slater please!!!!!!!!
Re: Deacon Confirmed. A good contract?
I think that Deacon had his golden days when playing year after year behind a juggernaut pack which often gave him all the time in the world to dictate play and as a good player, give him credit, he took full advantage.
Behind a poorer pack, like Wigan's in recent years, I doubt he would have impressed half as much as has been demonstrated by his form at Bradford of late (otherwise, why would they replace him with an older player?).
A dominant pack is capable of making a good halfback look great and this could be the case with Deacon.

Re: Deacon Confirmed. A good contract?
Ok, Deacon......WHY???? Half Back Coach??? Tomkins is better that Deacon ever was in his hay day...Kicking Coach?? Richards has kicked batter STAT FACT.
With all the bish bosh we've just forked out on an assistant coach/first team aged player...shouldnt we have spent it on the squad??? strengthen the Pack? decent leader for captain? Better 2nd rower and sack J Tompkins?
This is a joke and a retirement cheque for a once average half back.
No one is to stone anybody until I blow this whistle!
Re: Paul Deacon - a good contract?
Deacon was a decent player for Bradford but be honest, whenever we played them even when Bradford were dominant was Deacon a player you feared? I certainly was never worried about him. Compare that to Long at Saints or Burrow at Leeds.cherry.pie wrote: You seem to be making out that Deacon is a bad player, but he seemed to be the cheif organiser in the dominant Bradford side that won every trophy available under Brian Noble. He's not the best halfback there ever was, but he's still one of the best Super League has seen.
I can see why we have signed him (as cover) but lets not make him out to be some sort of star player just because he has signed for us.
As I think I said elsewhere if he ended up at 7 and that meant TL at 9 instead of Piggy I would not complain but I would still not expect him to set the world on fire.

Re: paul deacon
Great to see us sign him, always liked him as a player and a local boy too.
I think he will great for us and a good influence around the club
