Wigan to have 5 Captains
Re: Wigan to have 5 Captains
There are many possibilities why this has come about.
Lockers is not rated by Maquire as a club captain but IL wouldn't let him ditch him completely from the role.
Lockers is not rated by Maquire as a club captain but there isn't a stand out leader anywhere in the team so we end up with this system.
It's an innovative idea in its own right and has been pointed out is used by the likes of Man Utd.
It's a recognition that Lockers game (35 tackles a match etc) simply does not lend itself to the captains job and so someone else needs to do it. Leading by example isn't enough so we need a different player as captain.
Take your pick!
Myself I go for the last one. I have long argued that Lockers would be an even better player if not captain and that when leading by example wasn't enough he didn't have the skills to lift the team verbally or by taking charge.
I think taking the job away from him will improve his game and it's long overdue.

Lockers led us through a very difficult patch even though many including myself had doubts.
also MM asked Lockers if he was ok with this and he said yes. i hope he shows his true talent this season knowing he is still a leader but without as much pressure as before

Re: Wigan to have 5 Captains
Well his leadership has been questioned many times. There hasn't been a season since he has been captain that his captaincy hasn't been discussed in terms of is he the right man for the job.THE 18th Man wrote:Lockers led us through a very difficult patch even though many including myself had doubts.
And if he had said no? It would have probably happened anyway IMO. Maquire has obviously identified issues with the captaincy or there would be no change.also MM asked Lockers if he was ok with this and he said yes. i hope he shows his true talent this season knowing he is still a leader but without as much pressure as before

Is this not a system adopted by Craig Bellamy at Melbourne Storm that MM thinks is worthwhile.DaveO wrote:There are many possibilities why this has come about.

Re: Wigan to have 5 Captains
at my club we share the captaincy between 3-4 players, ot seems to work for us i know in amatuer the sides change regular so its difficult to eep same one but i know when i'm skipper i do play alot better and when i'm not i want to prove i should be. saying that they players in squad know who the senior ones are and its just us 3-4 players talking, its works because we are pread out quite evenly and seem to control our areas of the pitch.
i think players will still respect lockers as the club captain and not try undermine his decisions.
my 5 would be
Lockers
Fielden
Gleeson
Tommy
Sam T.
richards is too much out of way on wing for me.
if mcilourum was going to playing regular he would be one for future

They have used it in the past but have a designated captain now I think.Panchitta Marra wrote:

So it's a nice way to take the job off Lockers and give it to someone else down the line

Re: Wigan to have 5 Captains
A leadership group is common place in RL. From memory, John Monie introduced it at Wigan RLFC. I have never heard of any team rotating the captaincy. The nearest I have heard is a team having a club captain and a playing captain. Any team must have a single captain IMO, it is pointless creating confusion. Cameron Smith was the Melbourne captain. Lockers is our captain unless he is not selected due to injury or form. He has done a very good job in difficult circumstances IMO.
Sure fans will raise captaincy issues every season just as they do about umpteen topics unless a club is the best club in the competition. Strewtrh fans even find discussing the shade of cherry used in shirts or how to pronounce the names of players interesting.

Re: Wigan to have 5 Captains
If MM thinks at this is the best thing to do at present then so be it. I'd prefer O'Loughlin as our captain as a singular captain is all I have known and accept as 'normal'. Im sure it's not going to be a big deal though as the captains are their for formalities.
I remember Liverpool FC having Jamie Redknapp as club captain and, I think, Robbie Fowler as team captain in the 90s... mainly because redknapp was often injured. Don't Man Utd have this now with Gary Neville and Giggs (or whever, ferdinand)

Smith is now the captain but before he got it Melbourne ran with the system Maquire is introducing now I think. I believe he was part of the captain rota there and emerged as the sole captain after a while of running that system.cpwigan wrote:A leadership group is common place in RL. Not any more he isn't. A captain will be named for each game - that is how it is going to work. It may be him or it may not but one thing is for certain he will play games this season not as the captain.

Whenever difficult circumstances presented themselves is when Lockers captaincy was shown up as inadequate IMO. He was as likely to be stood under the sticks with his head down as any of them when things were going badly.
Not sure what your point is here but yes the captaincy will be discussed especially when something like this is announced by the club.Sure fans will raise captaincy issues every season just as they do about umpteen topics unless a club is the best club in the competition.
