Colin Tyrer

Post by ancientnloyal »

Just found out he's my wife's great uncle so would now obviously want to learn a bit more. I know he played during the doldrums and an excellent kicker and went to Barrow but thats it. was he any good bar the kicking?

Sadly he was in the paper got attacked recently which sparked this interest.

He was a decent player. Wasn't it Tyrer that got his jaw deliberately smashed by Cas in the 1970 CC Final. Famous for the length of time he took to take his kicks.

My auntie went to watch wigan once and was confused as to why the wigan crowd were chanting for northern Ireland, until it was pointed out they were singing for Colin tyrer!

Well we find it funny anyway![/code]

Hepworths "tackle" was the worst I have ever seen, however a few years later Tyrer took his revenge in a night game at Leeds.
Tyrer was a great attacking fullback, with loads of pace, but wasn't the best of defenders. I remember him scoring a try from a penalty v Saints when everyone thought he was strolling up to take a kick at goal. Instead he tapped the ball to himself and shot in from about 20 yards. On the down side he lost us the Championship final in 1970 -71 season v Saints when he played injured and was too slow to get to John Walsh's attempted drop goal. The ball bounced over his head and Billy Benyon (he was offside)scored the match winning try.
As someone else has said he took an age to kick a goal and it used to wind the opposition fans up. Just to add, his son Shaun played for Wigan and kicked the match winning goals v Widnes in the Lancashire Cup semi final in 1988.

I seem to remember a period that Colin Tyrer was the league's leading goal kicker and leading try scorer and was roundly booed by sections of Wigan "fans" almost every time he touched the ball.

It was before my time but I have seen a few clips of it and it was an absolute shocker. Some of the tackles you see from clips of the older games are absolutely awful, the game seemed so much dirtier back then compared to now.

I think Google have that one wrong. It was not his elbow, but his fist! Reason I know is that the Royal Oak on Standishgate had a superb framed picture on its wall of the exact split second when fist connected with jaw and blood gushed out. By rights, Hepworth should have been the first player ever to be dismissed in a Wembley Final, an 'honour' that would befall Sid Hynes for decking Alex Murphy the following year!

IIRC, Hepworth never figured in a Castleford team visiting Central Park after that!

Getting back to Tyrer, he was perhaps the slowest kick taker in the games history. He was also one of the most accurate in his day. I recall one occasion when referee Eric Clay (remember him!!) threatened to send him off for delaying play. That was a bit ridiculous as Clay of all people knew full well how long he took with his kicks. To appease him that day, Eric Ashton took over the kicking duties!

Noone appears to have mentioned that Tyrer was also a member of Leigh's coaching staff for a number of years!
