Shaun Wane

Post by AdamMac »

Just thought I would share these comments as I think they are fantastic and really show what Waney is all about!!! Legend.

Stand in coach Shaun Wane summed up their philosophy when asked about why he had kept goulding on for so long with a deadleg, coming up with one of the lines of the season when he wryly noted, “I’m a frontrower, I don’t like taking wingers off, no matter what happens, it’s against my nature.”.

Despite that praise, Wane also admitted that he was slightly disappointed that his team had conceded points at Headingley, unlike a week earlier when Hull FC were thumped 46-0 at the KC Stadium.
the assistant coach added: “I enjoyed it, but after last week’s nil scoreline I guess I’m a little disappointed with the 12 points we conceded tonight.
“There will be a tough video session for the lads on Monday morning.
“It was a good performance tonight, but that 12 points will still niggle me.”

THE INTERVIEW, WITH WAYNE AFTER THE MATCH WAS PRETTY POOR considering the way the team performed he should of never left Goulding on limping like that he is still a young player and should have been looked after better than that.I can never remember Wayne being a legend average player that was sold to Leeds if i remember rightly.Thought he was very up himself the players deserve better credits than he gave them.

I saw the same interview. The man was just being honest. He was unhappy at shipping 12 points.Nothing wrong with that.God help him if we had lost that's I can say.Of course we all had concern's regarding young Goulding being kept on the playing field. But Shaun was the stand in coach for the match and in my opinion he did more than an average job.Forgive the man for his flippancy and that is all it was meant to be!A little too much read into a flippant comment me thinks. And whilst he may not in your opinion (of which you are entitled) he did not let anyone down in his playing days.Rather have a man that bleeds Wigan blood than a fancy pants like Millward. :D

Workman27 - Did you attend the WCC in 87 against Manly? If not get the DVD. Shaun Wane is a tough as they come and he's played a major part in my opinion in installing his own great qualities into this curent Wigan team and I for one am loving every minute.

I think Shaun Wane is an excellent coach and really drives the players on. I see nothing wrong with Goulding playing on. It impressed me re Goulding's attitude. Wane the player? Manly was his greatest 80 minutes by far.

Oddly and somewhat paradoxically to the coach he is now is that John Monie criticised Wane in his autobiography saying something like Wane wanted to play like Andy Platt but not train like Andy Platt and so kept breaking down because his body was not strong/tough enough to play that way.

For me Waney was a solid player, decent engine but his balance when running made him easier to tackle because he leaned too far forward.

good anecdote although sadly not quite a paradox!

Wane will give credit where its due to the players in the dressing room after the game and they respect him for it. Lack of praise from him in the papers and on Sky sends out a very clear message to the other clubs that we're not going to roll over and concede early tries. He'll get this message across too on the training pitch and watching videos of previous games. Regarding Goulding he had a dead leg, nothing serious and we've got a week off for him to recover. Perhaps if players like Karl Pryce were made to stay on the field when they get a knock he might stop being such a wimp. Darrell wasn't complaining he just got on with it. "you don't come off unless you're carried off" - Shaun Edwards I believe?

I don't think there's ever been a huge link between playing ability and coaching ability.

IMO Shaun is a better coach than some Super League coaches! If you want to know who I'm talking about in particular I call him Lizard Face.
