Very strange timing. The summer vacation is not a time jobs are advertised etc so he either secured the post a long time ago and kept quiet about it or he was given the job without any post being advertised which is not really by the rules.

However, I presume he will be a PE teacher so some school should have an excellent coach. I hope he realises coaching is walk in the park compared to being a teacher

He was teaching for quite a while before he went to Gateshead. He told me he really enjoys it and enjoys working with the kids. I don't know which school he's going to be teaching at, I'll ask him though.
From what I can gather from the last conversation that I had with him, before he started coaching again, teaching seemed to be part of his long term plans.
I bet the school will have one hell of a RL team though . He was a very good player himself, before injury ended his career, before it had really got off the ground, it's a shame.

I don't blame him. As a coach,regardless of pedigree, you've got to work on the assumption that you're on borrowed time and at some point in the not too distant future you're going to get sacked.

His son is at school with our youngest. Steve told us a month or two back that he'd qualified as a teacher because of the uncertainty that goes with being a RL coach these days.

Which when you consider his past experiences at Whitehaven and at Widnes (& maybe others I've forgotten?) you can't blame him.

I think there will be some PE / Games to it, but its also classroom stuff. Was teaching ICT at the end of last term.

I do hope he'll be working with the rugby teams of course!!

I think job security and not having to travel ridiculous distances on a daily? basis given he has a young family would be huge factors. I daresay the pay at Championship level for a coach is nowhere near what we think.

He might have returned to the Deanery. Either way he should significantly benefit some school / pupils RL playing ability. Every school in Wigan should have a genuine RL expert in their PE department.

Hopefully Deanery yes cp - though his son goes there so maybe he may have gone elsewhere.

He was a keen spectator last year at the kids games, but would be good to see him involved with coaching along with the current coach Kris Ratcliffe (Blackpool Panthers forward)

I forget his name and I presume he has retired now but the old PE guy at the Deanery was a legend in terms in RL.

Oh I wish you hadn't said that, now you've got me frustrated that I can't remember his name. He taught both me and Steve when we were there. Steve was picked for GB schools, under the guidance of the PE teacher.
I can even picture him, deep voice, curly hair and a passion for golf, rugby and most sports.
