I used to like seeing Dennis Boyd execute his full on body check. It was something peculiar to just him. I'd never seen it before and I have never seen the likes of it since but the memories of it remain.

That lad COULD tackle and it was amazing how many of his opponents would give him a wide berth after being treated to his 'speciality'!

Do you not think there is a certain danger with shoulder charges that people abuse the rules to a certain extent?
For example, Morley perfected a technique where he would trail his arm and lead with the shoulder, almost as if he could swing his shoulder, into the tackle. The danger in this is that it almost always leads to contact with the head because Morley is usually taller than his opponent and they duck into challenges taking the ball in. It is always deemed "accidental", yet it's obvious contact is going to be with the head and he knows it.

I do like to see shoulder charges, but a lot of players just forget technique and throw their shoulder at a player knowing that contact with the shoulder to a players head rarely gets punished and that in the battle between face vs shoulder, shoulder comes out relatively unscathed.

Totally agree with you Cherry re Morley and for all his 'toughness' Moz developed that technique first because he kept hurting his own sternum masking ball and all and when he first went to the NRL his swinging arm was too obvious and initially got him into trouble.

The problem for me lies with where do you start and stop. The biggest cause of serious injury for me is when players wrap their legs around the lower legs of ball carriers in a 2 / 3 man tackle. I would like to see that tactic outlawed but IMO it never will be. I would like to see all tackles below chest height because at the moment you can justify a multitude of techniques and escape punishment. If it was the case then maybe shoulder charges would be more legitimate / legal. I just think we have umpteen issues re tackling and the furore re wrestling other than grappling is not as big an issue.

It is difficult but I guess if you prevent ball and all tackles it would encourage offloading more etc

Second rower Harrison Hansen will miss the rest of the season for Super League table-toppers Wigan.

Hansen suffered a recurrence of a shoulder injury during the Warriors' 38-18 triumph at Hull KR on Sunday and will miss his club's final match of the regular season against Bradford on Friday week, the play-off series and the Grand Final if Wigan reach Old Trafford on October 2.

I'm gutted for him.
Stevethegas and I were chatting to him before a game shortly after he'd done his shoulder the first time and he was devastated. Having said that he spoke with a genuine determination about how he intended to get himself fit again and come back with a bang. I thought the try against Leeds epitomised that attitude. At that time he was playing about as well as I've ever seen him play.

Sadly it's another second row out and I think he's a massive loss. Great opportunity for the likes of Chris Tuson but I'd rather see a fully fit H going into the playoffs. :conf:

Real shame for Hansen, he has been great AGAIN this season.
Don't understand all these calls for the shoulder charge to be banned that have suddenly come up since the Luke Burgess injury.
Burgess was injured by a clash of heads, the shoulder charge is one of the best tackles in the game, and one of the things that marks our players out against the nancy boy, let me wrap you in my arms yawnion players.
Long may the shoulder charge continue to jolt the ball free in RL!!
