Madge and Wane

Post by AdamMac »

Like this article (taken from Daily Star), especially the bit at the end when Waney mentions about blood being spilt in training with the forwards.

WIGAN'S DYNAMIC DUO ARE SUMMIT SPECIAL:

IT’S a coaching partnership that is on the verge of putting Wigan back at the summit of rugby league.

The Australian and the local boy made good who wears his heart on his sleeve.

When Warriors chairman Ian Lenagan decided to go for a cutting edge coach in Melbourne Storm No.2 Michael Maguire to replace Brian Noble at the end of last season, he made just as smart a move when he picked Shaun Wane as the Aussie’s right-hand man.

Wane, a tough prop who made more than 150 appearances for his hometown club, has fitted in perfectly with workaholic Maguire’s regime.

And in less than 12 months they have made Wigan the most consistent side in Super League and favourites to win their first Grand Final since 1998 on Saturday.

It helps that the two men get on famously and Wane is the ideal man to highlight his boss’ strengths.

“He is the hardest working coach I’ve ever met and he is brutally honest with his coaching staff and his players,” said Wane. “That honesty means that the players know exactly where they stand.

“Michael won’t tolerate anybody who goes away from the strict rules he has laid down.

“But by the same token he rewards those who work hard on the training pitch and on the field.

“And he has helped a lot of players this season in improving their game, both on the technical side and in terms of restoring confidence and commitment.

“As a result there is a great team spirit on and off the field. They all want to work for him – they both like and respect him.

“He listens to what I have to say and when he takes some of my ideas on board I’m very grateful.”

Wane rubbishes the view that Maguire is so dedicated to the job that he can’t enjoy himself away from the game.

He said: “He likes his social life. We visit each other’s homes frequently and always have a laugh, but the conversation inevitably turns to rugby league. Our wives don’t like it but we can’t help it – we are just passionate about the game.”

Wane knows that Maguire, already highly regarded in Australia, will be even more sought after if Wigan beat St Helens on Saturday and Parramatta sounded him out recently.

He added: “He will coach again in the NRL but he’s here for three years and totally committed to his work with Wigan.”

St Helens couldn’t be more ideal opponents for Maguire and Wane at Old Trafford. Wane said: “The most satisfying win so far this season was the 18-10 at Saints at Easter.

“It was Wigan’s last visit to Knowsley Road and we did a job on them.

“Michael had never experienced an atmosphere like it and was delighted with the defensive performance.

“Meeting at Old Trafford is massive – it’s still the biggest derby in the world – and composure and working to our game plan will be crucial.”

Wane has worked hard with the Warriors’ front-rowers this season and added: “It gets pretty brutal at times in training and there has been some blood spilt.

“But the way they have been playing makes it worthwhile.”

Same here, I'm pumped after I read or listen to what he has to say so god knows what the players feel like!!! I'd imagine they would believe that they can walk through walls.
