Lima plotting demolition derby

KIWI battering ram Jeff Lima is counting the days until he can be unleashed on St Helens.

The prop has not played a competitive match since early September, and that five-months without any serious action – coupled with his move to Wigan – has cranked up the excitement levels ahead of Saturday’s Super League opener against Saints.

“I honestly can’t wait to get out there and try and play good footy for Wigan,” he said.

“I’ve been desperate to get started since September and now we’re getting closer to it, I’m really excited about playing.”

With Stuart Fielden’s hopes of playing in the Millennium Magic event receding following an off-season knee operation, Lima will be under more pressure to quell St Helens’ fire in a blockbuster Grand Final rematch.

And the former Kiwi Test enforcer has promised fans he will be doing all he can to try and make sure they get their Super League campaign off to a flyer.

He said: “I know what they want from me, I know what my job is.

“I’m there to run 100 mph, tackle 100 mph, and hit hard. That’s my job.”

The Wigan players have informed Lima and former Melbourne team-mate Ryam Hoffman all about the derby rivalry, ahead of their clash in Cardiff (kick-off 7pm).

Hoffman added: “Everyone keeps telling me about the St Helens rivalry, I’m really looking forward to it.

“I reckon the Magic weekend is a fantastic concept and to be able to play against a side like St Helens, it will hopefully get us on a good footing.”

If Fielden is ruled out, he should be fit to face his former club Bradford the following week. Coach Michael Maguire is hoping Martin Gleeson and Harrison Hansen are fit to play.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
