SAUCE FOR THE GOOSE.

Got something to discuss about RL in general? Then this is the place to post it.

SAUCE FOR THE GOOSE.

Post by A49 »

For app. 100 years, Rugby League clubs have been seducing the finest RU players with money, amongst a myriad of others, Jim Sullivan, Billy Boston and Tuigamalla (pardon the spelling), from Wigan alone.

For app.10 years, the situation has been largely reversed attracting howls of complaint from many quarters in RL circles including Wiganers.

Is there any danger that this could be interpreted as double standards?

Yes and no.

Just as RU did when it happened the natural reaction in RL has been how can we reduce losses. However, in RU players who went were branded traitors and banned whereas most League fans understand the financial motive and the biggers international profile as reason why players leave and players who do move are welcomed back.

No. Totally different scenario. Cliff Morgan said you could be banned by the RU just because you were rumoured to have spoken to anyone connected with RL. Those 100 years you mention were nothing short of sporting apartheid, fascism elitism or whatever you care to call it. It amounts to a very ugly period in UK sporting history and still exists in many minds!
