Got something to discuss about RL in general? Then this is the place to post it.

The End of the 'Great' Saints side?

Post by ancientnloyal »

'tis true that St Helens have been a great team for a decade... yes, great... because they've been consistantly up there at Wembley, semi finals and grand Finals, there's no denying it. Just now I think it's the start of their Bradford/Wigan moment and are on the slippery slope to the middle of the bunch... Played 5, won 2.

Quins beat them tonight 27-12... credit to Quins they are playing some good rugby and seemed to comfortably be in control... already now beaten Saints and Leeds away!

Crowd for St Helens v Harlequins: 6,050... I know people have to travel to Widnes but 6,000? :doz:

Pryce and Joe Mellor both played for Quins.
Pryce scored again.

I believe in part based on the judgements of people I respect, Saints made a bad choice for a new head coach. Simmons IMO has compounded the issues Saints have by immediately bringing back the old guard instead of keeping faith with young players that were starting to emerge.

Saints are getting a taste, only a small one of how your team can be decinated by players going to otheer codes, countries etc.

Saints will have a very bad season commercially and emotionally playing at Widnes. Even with the new ground, I believe the days of Saints fans pressurising referees are now gone.

A very difficult season for Saints. One they should use to blood young players.

They hardly have to travel, it's probably no more than 3 miles from Sherdley Park to the Halton Stadium. Saints supporters are very fickle and paranoid as well as being tighter than a Morecambe Bay mussel. They think that it's all a plot by Wigan and the RL to get them to merge with Widnes and become the Saint Vikings.

It will be a shame if Saints do flop this season as I want them in the CC final and the GF.

It seems that there are some problems at saints. I listened to the first 20 mins on Wish FM and off the commentary which had a bias to saints being the local team they sounded terrible butt I expected the normal saints comeback which didn'tseem to happen.

Re the crowd - Apparently the prices are sky high because obviously the club need to take in the money but also have to pay rent to the stadium company. But 6k is pretty bad. But again they never seemed to be able to turn their success in recent years to increased or even maintained crowds the following season.
and yes it is good..........................

When you think about factors such as Friday night rugby and the Quins away support etc I don't think 6000 would be much better anyway at KR. Last seasons attendance at KR against the same team was 10k - but that was played on a Sunday

I sincerely hope that this is not the demise of Stains as a team. I have enjoyed our encounters over the years and it would not be the same to see a Stains side uncompetative. Much as I hate them as a club I do respect them as a playing side. Some have been memorable games and not always joyous ones. But to see the Stains in decline to the extent that we are expected to whitewash them is no good for the game from the spectator view point. Of course I do love to see us beat them every time we meet but I for one do not wish for a one sided game.I like to see a hard faught game with a victory going to us. At least you can say to yourselves on the way home God that was a bloody good game that was! So don't wish for the decline of Stains we need super league to be what it say's on the can Super League. Not mediocrity league. :D

Sorry Kooch. I'd be happy with hard won victories against the other 12 but when it comes to Stains, I want to batter them every time!
