As a Sunderland fan in football i can see the similarities between Newcastle United fans and Wigan Warriors fans despite Newcastle United being nowhere near as successful in football as Wigan are in the super league.

A Newcastle fan thinks himself as a god in football they expect everything to go their way from the first whistle and when it doesn't they blame individual players. For example Leon Best signed for Newcastle united and had a poor debut and straight away the player received abuse from the fans and he never played for a large amount of games after. After the sale of Andy Carroll. Leon Best got another chance and scored a Hat-trick of goals and the newcastle fans instantly worshipped him.

A Wigan Warriors fan thinks himself a god in rugby league, they also expect everything to go their way from the first whistle Brett Finch made his debut and was poor, Straight away the Wigan fans get on his back as they do not think he is up to the rugby league standard despite coming back from a lengthy period through injury. On his second appearance despite his defence improving with some big hits the Wigan fans still put the blame on him. I can guarentee that once this player has a good game all of the Wigan fans will love him instantly.

your point about Finch is something some of us, myself included, have pointed out on here on a number of occasions recently in various places. I've pointed out that the difference between a short 'hospital pass' to Farrell can become a short pass that puts Farrell through a narrow gap to score and that his kicks to the ingoal area will improve with more game time not least because the other players on the team will get used to how he plays. Against Leeds when he was doing the organising in the last 20 minutes he clearly showed what his role should be and he put in a decent defensive shift throughout the game. So clearly we have another wild generalisation about Wigan fans which fails to acknowledge those who disagree, like there aren't enough! Is it a trait of Sunderland fans to only see one side of the argument or is that just you? ;)

Somebody tell me why there is such a difference.
1. Only the most committed, enthusiastic fans go to away games, as a general rule. The regular moaners tend to stay home. (I don't mean this as a criticism of those who can't get to away games, BTW.)

2. At away games, we're all together, instead of being spread out amongst 3 stands, which makes it dificult to get any chants/cheers going.

3. All seating, and mostly reserved seating, which is the big difference between the DW and Central Park atmospheres. The noisy ones can't congregate as we did at CP. Also, it's not as easy to get excited when sitting down - the sort of celebrations we see on the terraced away stadiums just aren't possible.

4. I could be wrong with this one, but I suspect that more alcohol is consumed on away trips. Whatever you think of that, it definitely increases noise levels!

Unbeaten in 13 months away in the league

spanning 18 games including Magic weekends.

In the same period we've lost 8 home matches including St George.

Reading this long thread my personal thoughts are that it's not the fan's fault at all, whether home or away, it's a team psychological problem. As mentioned, clubs come to Wigan with nothing to lose and give it their all, Quins, Huddersfield, Catalans...

When we go away from home we know that we're the team that the home side has to beat, we don't have any pressure and simply start to dominate from the off. I can't remember the last tricky away game in the league... Hull KR gave a go in the second half last year... Salford held us around Easter time... Huddersfield kept up with us til late on but apart form that, the Wire game.

You only have to take a look at the Wigan Warriors Fan Page on Facebook to see the pessimism some fans seem to have. After every match or even during the match with the updates there is a lot of negativity.

Either players should be dropped, sacked, the referee is rubbish (despite admittedly being in the right), wigan not playing well enough (even when winning) the list goes on and on and the atmosphere quickly becomes very negative.

Its quite sad to think that at a time when Wigan are pulling themselves back from a period of little success and back to a period where a young team of impressive calibre has the potential to really make an impact that we have fans whose only goal seems to complain or mae petty biased statements with little or no awareness of how the game works.

An example is the "Exiles Match". It's seen as controversial but anyone can see that it is meant to benefit the game. Instead, we have people incessant with rage that we might have to have some of our players play an extra game.

I dont know whether this attitude is prevalent in other clubs but either online or in the staidum; Wigan fans are extremely negative and prone to complaining.

I think human nature is predisposed to be negative rather than positive.

I think all clubs fans will moan, me included here at Wigan  whether it be on the site forums, social network sites or at/during/after a game.

We do say a lot of positive things as well, so think you are being a tad harsh on the supporters

No one sees everything the same way.

You only need to look at the referees for example
Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
