I've always known Hodgson as a full backbut read an interview with him somewhere a while back. Can't remember the circumstances, think he got a bad injury and when he came back couldn't get his regular position back so got moved to full back, something like that.
I think the full back position is slightly different in Australia, they always play like a second 6 these days, while it's always been viewed as a slightly different role over here. Darren Lockyer was never great under a high ball or as a last ditch defender (v Michael de Vere aside). But he was always good enough at those things. Sam just needs more work under the high ball and he'll get better at that. I'd also like to see him work harder to catch kicks on the full. Sometimes he seems a bit too happy to let it bounce. I see Billy Slater sprinting all over the field to catch kicks on the full and one of the reasons he always looks so good is because the kick chase team never get as close to him as they do with everyone else, because he works so hard top catch it on the full. I think as a youngster sam is better suited to full back. He's all about running at the minute. As he gets older, i think he'll learn to bring others into the game a bit more and he may move back back to 6 later in his career when he slows down a bit. You still get the feeling he's thinking academy rugby where he could always tear teams apart on his own. Another thing i think he'll get better at over the years is being more composed with the ball, everything is 100mph around him and he doesn't see supports sometimes.
Hope i don't sound like i'm criticizing him coz i'm really not!

Hodgson was never a full back as a junior. He got pushed there in his early years as a pro.
I am new so bear with me I was on twitter and seen this qoute so I asked Brett. I asked him he replied.
@massey1981 haha. Now was there any need for that last 2 words???

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
