140 Years Old! Team of All Time...

Post by ancientnloyal »

Next year, 2012, Wigan Rugby will be 140 years old! 21st November marks the anniversary of a Wigan Cricket Club members meeting at the Royal Hotel in Standishgate in which the club came to exist.

Been looking into this for a while and thought why not have a vote each month to find the ultimate team of the past 140 years? January will start with the fullback, the likes of Sullivan, Radlinski, Hampson... and then the wingmen etc... Moving onto the coach and finally the best Game ever for Wigan.

So, from January I'll set up a vote and the necessary plausible candidates with a biog/profile to represent their particular cases. If anyone would like to suggest a fullback from the past 140 years have a say... if i've missed anyone out who'd deserve to have the #1 jersey i'll pop them in.

140 years! bloody 'ell

Even though I never saw him play, I would have to go with Sullivan for his longevity of service and unbeatable points scoring record!

Sullivan obviously

Martin Ryan deserves a mention for changing full back play

Not his greatest fan but Fairbairn? Ashby? Tyrer? Oops nearly forgot a true great, Punchy Griffiths!!

My own personal favourite for a brief cameo, Phil Blake. Another hopefully not just a cameo was Amos. That spell prior to colliding with the goal post he was sublime.

Don't forget Jimmy Birts.

He cheered me up every week, as I watched my dad call him every name under the sun.

I met up with Jimmy in Tenerife where he was just a worn out drunk. We spent a good hour reminiscing, he was good company. He died not long after. Sad way to go!
