Jack Hughes has signed a new five year deal with Wigan.

Hughes, who was out of contract at the end of this year has agreed improved terms for the rest of the year and is also tied to the club for 2013 & 2014.

Wigan have also taken an option to retain him for the following two years.

Great news for us :)

Well done Mr Lenegan & Shaun Wane keeping this young 'homegrown' lad.

Hughes Commits Future To Warriors

Wigan Warriors are delighted to announce that budding young star, Jack Hughes, has signed a new 5-Year Contract with the Club for 2012, 2013 and 2014 with a Club option for 2015 and 2016.

The highly-promising 20-year old has played primarily as a Second-Row Forward but has successfully switched to playing Centre for the past few weeks replacing the injured George Carmont.

Jack has impressed the Warriors management with his attitude, application and performances throughout the first month of the new Season and has been outstanding throughout the tough pre-Season preparation.

Speaking about the contract extension, Chairman Ian Lenagan said:

"It is excellent news for the Club and its fans that we have been able to secure the long-term future of Jack Hughes. He is a quality young player, locally born, who has an excellent attitude and commitment and is just the sort of player we want to build the team around in the seasons to come. From being a concern, the Centre position is looking strong again with Darrell Goulding, Jack Hughes and Anthony Gelling plus other excellent players coming through the Academy."

Head Coach, Shaun Wane added:

"I am really pleased by the announcement. Jack is a big strong athlete with talent and skills and we are delighted that one of the most promising youngsters in the English game has pledged his long-term future to Wigan."

Rugby Manager, Kris Radlinski commented:

"We have known for quite a while that Jack has had all the physical attributes but over the off-season he has matured incredibly. He looks like he belongs in First Grade, never looking nervous or out of place. He has potential leadership qualities that we will tap into and his confidence will continue to grow. "

Hughes himself added,

"I am over the moon to know that I am going to spend the next few years of my career at my hometown Club. I will continue to work as hard as I can and am looking forward to being a part of the Club's future success under Shaun and Iestyn."

Good news, i think he should take a massive confidence boost from this, and from the Catalan game. Catalan came with a gameplan to attack down his wing, and only once or twice did he look slightly out of depth. Richards/Finch covered him well though. Great youth player ready to step into Carmonts shoes.

Excellent news!

To get the most out of Pat we need a strong centre alongside him. No one could question just how fantastic Pat and George have been together for Wigan over the last few years.

Hopefully Jack will be able to step straight in for George and keep moving Pat up the points table!

I concur entirely. Great news for a great young lad with a great future.

I may be controversial here but is it time that we started considering how long Pat has left in him.

Don't get me wrong I'm thinking long term here but he's lost several yards of pace and I would like to see a youngster outside Hughes at some point.

Maybe looking at 2014-2015 as there's no doubt that our stand out players at the moment are Wigan Youngsters, which is great!!

Just looking to the future that's all.

Thoughts?

Joel Tomkins signed a five year deal.

If Hughes is committed to the contract and will honour it then great but if he steps up and replaces Joel, which I think he could do, who is to say history will not repeat itself?

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, pace isn't everything. Richards defensive experience, airborne supremacy and kicking make up for him lacking a few yards.
