His great kicking game has gone to pot if you read the Salford board on rlfans (and that is before all these rumours started so it's not sour grapes).
As to "Does everything needed of a halfback other than take the line on a little more." he doesn't and can't do what Finch does (awssome again tonight), so no he doesn't

Longy thinks he does. The player I saw at Saints did. IIRC, Smith came via football to RL; played asd a junior for Everton. He can kick very well, may even have place kicked at Saints in the past. In emerging England is he not. Decent player IMO
I agree that Smith is decent though not spectacular. But put him in our system and he should improve. He won't have the ego to think its his team to control but should have the confidence that he can play at a high level when given the chance
As I said previously Smith is a good signing and I really like the idea of us having an English half back going forward. If we can keep Finch to go with him then that would be perfect. Young English half backs arent cheap and they command a premium due to the scarcity of them. If Wigan sign Smith then he will be on twice as much as people would expect. This may be far more than his talent is worth but its the going rate unfortunately.
think it would be a disaster to lose both half backs at the same time, tommy is going and he will be a big loss, but to lose finch as well is un-thinkable and we must move heaven and earth to keep him.if matty smith is coming then we need finch to help him and take the pressure off him.
According to the Wigan Observer Matty Smith is the player Shaun Wane wants:
“I’m one to think outside the box,” he said, revealing his preference for a “project” rather than a marquee recruit from Down Under. And Smith would appear to fit the bill, having shown glimpses of his ability at Salford this season after previous stints with Widnes and Crusaders when he struggled for opportunities at Saints behind Sean Long.
It also looks as though he is not looking at Lee Gaskell and still hoping Brett Finch will stay on:
"Reports elsewhere linking Wigan with St Helens’ out of favour Lee Gaskell were wide of the mark".
"Wane is still hoping to persuade stand-off Brett Finch to stay at the club despite strong interest from Super League and NRL sides, including ex-coach Michael Maguire’s Souths".
Sky Sports news is saying that S/W has come out and said that there is no change on the Brett Finch situation but he can confirm that Wigan are in talks with Dalford and Matty Smith over the possibility of bringing him to the DW. Don't really know how I feel about there much better players about, but we have all seen how the Wigan tranng system can turn players around

Is this Dalford lad any good? :lol1:
I've just read that & I think I need to go back to bed :exc: I was wondering who Dalford was
Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
