Joe Mellor

Post by Lost In The Midlands »

Sitting here at half time and a couple of people are talking about Joe Mellor. I was thinking the same thing. Has he done enough tonight to earn a recall?

He has showed some real style tonight and it may be that he is "on trial" seeing as though he has been allowed to play tonight. What are other peoples thoughts?

I'm with you. He's played well in a beaten side. Scored a good try and would have had another if he'd played to the whistle. When silly sums are being bandied about with the likes of Brown and Chase, it merely proves the lack of half backs. We should hang on to Joe. Who's to say how good he could be behind our pack?

I realise a lot of people are getting DaveO-ish about losing Tommy and Brett but it is not all about 2 players.

We still have a pack and a 3/4 line to match any other. Not to mention our FB. I'm sure we can develop a half back pairing to compete!

I've never seen Williams play, is he better than Mellor? is he a better prospect? If so I don't see the point of bringing him back if Wane is looking to play Williams.

I certainly didn't see much to make me think we would be better with him in the halves over Lockers.

That's one of the reasons I thought he did well. He was playing behind a beaten pack but what could he do behind a good pack of players that he knows to a certain degree.

He looked keen and his effort levels were good. Ok, he had a quieter second half but seemed to be trying to organise in back play. I think he would be worth a shot. Newts face it, we don't really have anything to loose in recalling him. Throw him into a few training sessions and let the powers that be decide and put Sean back at 13 where he belongs.

George is an excellent prospect but maybe not quite ready. Joe now has SL experience albeit in a lesser team. Between the two, I reckon the club can save a fortune!

Not really seen much of Joe Mellor before last night. What I saw was impressive. He looked a quality player. We know that loan spells sometimes bring out the best in young players.

So get him back in the fold and give him his chance

Prior to his major knee injury he was looking fantastic. Outshone the likes of Gaskelll / Lomax when Wigan / Saints met. His one failing was he seemed quiet and reserved, lacking the barking / driving force of the best halfbacks. As yet not physically back to where he was pre injury, may never be.

I wasnt that impressed, hard to assess behind a bad pack but for me he made a lot of mistakes and i have to say was unimpressed by the fact he had a 10 yard head start on hughes and JH had to run around another player and still managed to gun him down.

Have you heard anything about where he'll be playing next year CP? Some Widnes fans seem to think he's all but agreed to join them permanently next year. Do you know if Wigan have offered to renew his contract?
Nothing concrete but seems to be leaving and to Widnes.

He played OK, took a good interception pass for a try.
He didnt do anything out of the ordinary or stood out, playing in an average team.
If what CP says is correct that Joe Mellor outshone the likes of Lomax and Gaskell in a good Stains youth side, it cant have been on the strength of last nights level of performance.
Maybe his injury is a hurdle too far for Wigan.
