Matty Smith - Scrum Half Problem Solved?

Post by Shaun1967 »

"SALFORD scrum-half Matty Smith is on his way to Wigan in the next few days.

The Warriors had already agreed a deal from next year for the England player, but have now persuaded the Reds to let them have him straight away."

Only a couple of lines at the end of an article so not sure how to take this.
He has already played in the Challenge Cup for Salford.

“Usually the fans that abuse players like Sam have never done anything of any note themselves. They’re nobodies, whose greatest claim to fame is abusing someone who has, and these so-called ‘Eddie the Experts’ pretend to their mates that they have."

I heard this about 10 days ago that we wanted him on loan for the rest of this season and as a sweetener a couple of our youngsters to go there way, only neg is like you say he is cup tied.

I personally think that that is great news. It's not 'the answer' but it's a lot better to get an established Superleague (dare we say it International level) scrum half at the club pronto.
If nothing else it really sets him up for next season and he will have the invaluable experience of having Finch next to him offering his wisdom for several months. Good move if it all happens.

Would appear to confirm that Mellor won't be getting a new contract!

No problem with him coming early but it doesn't help with the most pressing problem which is a half back for the semi-final.

It makes it more likely Lockers will stand in again for that game IMO and that will be a mistake.

Does it solve the CC issue though. If anything it makes it more complicated?

This was my thinking. As I said I think it makes it more likely IMO Wane will play Lockers for the semi-final at 6 as Smith will be cup-tied. Whatever peoples opinions of moving Sam to to 6, Lockers does not work there.

If we beat Leeds there is also the final to consider. If fit beforehand Tommy will need game time so Smith will have to make way. If he isn't fit beforehand then we have the same problem as with the semi-final.
