Stuart Fielden to Leave Wigan

Post by josie andrews »

Wigan Warriors today announce that Prop Stuart Fielden will be leaving the Club when his contract expires at the end of the current season.

Stuart joined Wigan in 2006 in a Club record move from Bradford Bulls and played a huge part in helping the Warriors move away from the bottom of the table in his first year at the DW Stadium.

Stuart has been a great servant to Wigan in his seven years having made 141 appearances and scoring three tries. In 2010 Stuart played a huge part in Wigan coming top of the Super League table and winning the Grand Final with some powerful displays.

In the last two years, Stuart has been extremely unfortunate with injuries which have restricted him to just two appearances, the last one being in the final home game of this regular season against St Helens.

Speaking about the news, Head Coach Shaun Wane said:

"It was a very difficult decision to make not to offer Stuart a further contract. He has been a wonderful player and a superb role model. His commitment and attitude to training and getting back to fitness after two terrible years is a real credit to him.

"Now fully fit, Stuart is at the stage of his career where he is looking for a regular place in the side and with stiff competition for places we are unable to guarantee that here at Wigan. We feel sure that a move elsewhere would be in his best interest. We thank Stuart for his superb service and wish him all the best for the future."

Chairman Ian Lenagan commented:

"Stuart Fielden is a unique character, intense, committed, superfit and exemplary in his training effort. He has done well for Wigan and deserves regular first-team rugby which he will undoubtedly get at another Club. Our developing youngsters may preclude that option for him at Wigan."

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Did anyone else notice his face when he did the half time draw? He marched out like he meant business, did the draw, turned on his heel and marched back with a face like thunder, didn't even look up at the crowd almost like when they announced he was doing the draw and was leaving us it was the first he had heard of it. Clearly it wasn't but he was not a happy chappy.

The other bizarre thing at half time was when the scoreboard showed "Wigan Athletic 0 Fulham 11" :o
Never argue with an idiot. He will bring you down to his level and beat you with experience.
