Reds Snap Up Gaskill, Howarth Goes Other Way

Salford City Reds have today completed the season-long loan signing of St Helens stand-off / centre Lee Gaskill in a move that sees Reds’ hooker Stuart Howarth completing a similar move in the other direction to Langtree Park. Both players will return to their respective Clubs at the end of the year.

22-year old Lee is a classic rangy utility player who uses his pace at the line to find gaps and put players in. He made his debut against Catalan Dragons in 2010 but 2011 was when the youngster came of age.

Gaskill goes straight into the 19-Man Squad to face the Giants on Good Friday (3pm) and will wear the number 6 jersey for the Reds this season.

Reds interim Head Coach Alan Hunte said: “Lee is a good player who gives us good options. He’s played in a Grand Final for Saints, and while playing in a Final doesn’t automatically mean you are a good player, to get into contention for a Grand Final side you have to be of a high standard. We are looking forward to working with him.”

Looks like Gaskell's time is up at Saints. No fit halves and they send him to Salford!

LEE Gaskell has joined Salford City Reds on loan until the end of the season.

The 22-year-old half back has made 43 appearances for the Club since making his debut in 2010 but has found chances limited in 2013.

Coming the other way is Stuart Howarth, 23, who is a hooker / loose forward.

He was the only Reds player to feature in every one of the club’s 29 matches last season, mostly as a hooker but as scrum half towards the latter end of the campaign.

Saints Head Coach Nathan Brown said: “At this stage of his career Lee needs to be playing more regularly and with chances limited at present it made sense for him to go out on loan.

“We’re looking forward to watching him develop and I’m sure he will do a good job for Salford.

“Stuart has shown in his time at Salford that he is a capable and experienced player and will prove more than adequate cover for a multitude of positions.

“He will be put straight into the Good Friday squad and we are confident he will do well.”

Ha ha he is, & an ex Wigan U20's player. Lives across the road from a friend who I sit with at the stadium lol. I've known Stu tho from being a kid

This is a very odd piece of business. Saints are in desperate need of a half-back, they have one of if the not the best hooker in the league not that far of returning from injury and they send a talented young lad off to salford in replacement for a hooker who presumably wont get much time when Mr Roby is fit again.

I have heard that Mr Gaskell is less than popular and the size of his ego outweighs his ability (from a stains fan)

So for me its either;

1) NB knew that he wasnt going to play Gaskell again so thought he would try and do a deal to bring in a Hooker to cover Roby. In which case why not bring in a half-back that could play hooker?

2) Robys injury is worse than they first thought

3) NB just isnt very good at knowing what the team needs.

Stains seem a bit rudderless at the moment, to be honest if i was going to bring a hooker in id of tried to get clark from cas.
