Rugby

Post by Sgt. Bash »

Anyone notice how Sky claim to love Rugby League, acknowledge that it gives them more viewing figures than Rugby Union, yet constantly refer to Union as just "Rugby" whilst our sport always has to have the League suffix?

Also, League comes before Union in alphabetical order (how you would order things if you were impartial), yet on SSN, they always have Union news first on the lower news bar?

Also, "Rugby League World Cup" and "Rugby World Cup". Our World Cup came first! We're the Rugby World Cup, they're the Rugby UNION World Cup!!!

I feel better getting that off my chest! :D

Union was the first type of Rugby played, therefore it probably deserves to be called rugby.

Down under, most people call League 'footy' and Union is called Rugby. We would call association football 'footy' and fans of that form of football get all bent out of shape by Americans calling their 11-a-side gridiron sport football.

Its a shame that the blokes who change the 'Northern union' to Rugby League didn't have the foresight to see how maligned this might make some RL fans feel over a century later and didn't come up with a more unique name.

What bugs me is if Sky has a live match on then later on Sky News on the sports news slot they will generally show highlights of a union match even if the coverage is BBC or ESPN and not mention the match they have shown live!

I've nothing against the name Rugby League, I'd just like Union to be referred to by it's full title of Rugby Union rather than just Rugby.

I think Sky's coverage of Rugby League isn't that bad these days in terms of quantity. You get 2 live games, all the tries on teh Sunday night, Magazine show and Stats red button show mid-week, 'Backchat' on a Tuesday and the 'Supermen' show on a Thursday. I find they do show a wrap up of whats going on in Super League games on SSN and they do cover any breaking stories, like when Pat leaving was announced.

Ok, the quality can be questioned because of Eddie the idiot and general production values at the same level as a regional new report, but they give the game decent amount of coverage for where in stands in the national order of things.

By that reasoning, football should be known as Association Football!
