Re: Good Luck Latics!
Great day for Wigan Athletic and the town of Wigan but if the Latic's stay up in addition to winning the FA Cup and stay in the Premier League for ten years, it could result in football becoming established as the major game in Wigan like it now is in Huddersfield, Hull and Leeds.
In the past, Wigan has been unique with Rugby League being always bigger than football.
How many Rugby League supporters want to see that happen?
I for one, don't!
People in Wigan also need to remember what Whelan did to Orrell Rugby Union Club.

Congratulations Wigan Athletic
Congratulations from everyone at Wigan Warriors to the Management, Players, Staff and Fans of Wigan Athletic on winning the 2013 FA Cup Final.
The Latics defeated Manchester City 1-0 on Saturday evening at Wembley thanks to a late Ben Watson goal.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

It already is!!! It has always been so. The difference is that pre 90's the attraction of football was based elsewhere, nationally, Manchester, Merseyside. You go back to the 40's, 50's, 60's football fans across the North West incl Wigan went to Preston, Blackpool whomever was the main game that weekend to watch a world class player etc.Whelley Warrior wrote:Great day for Wigan Athletic and the town of Wigan but if the Latic's stay up in addition to winning the FA Cup and stay in the Premier League for ten years, it could result in football becoming established as the major game in Wigan like it now is in Huddersfield, Hull and Leeds.

What Wigan has always had is the passion / dedication to sport that allows it to have a world class RL team alongside the National Game.
Football got its act together a decade or more in terms of youth development. Even RU has got its act together. The RFL are cutting back on YOUTH DEVELOPMENT.
Yesterday was a great day for OUR TOWN, I like coming off the motorway and seeing signs 'Home to premiership football and SL RL'
Re: Good Luck Latics!
I left Wigan at the age of sixteen and am now 61.But I have always had Wigan in my heart. My true passion is WRLFC but I am proud as punch whenever anyone or anything is mentioned from Wigan. And I was as proud as punch that the Latics deservedly won the FA cup.Bloody well done Latics. From what I saw it seemed as though you where the favorite's and not the underdogs. The best team won and that was the Latics. And I wish that people would stop being so damned churlish and remember that for a small town in Lancashire we certainly let the world know who we are. And that through sport.Be it rugby league or football we will always give our best because we are Wigan. Well done Wigan Athletic. :eusa2: :eusa2:
Re: Good Luck Latics!
Well done latics-unbelievable. I too remember the latics in the 70's-my mate used to play centre forward for them. but sorry Kev Wigan rl supporters didn't suport the latics and the song went -we are all supporters FANATICS everyone !!not for latics. The only time the mob on the kop went to springfield park was when a big club was playing guaranteeing the chance of a ruck

Well done the Latics. It was a proud day for the town and the club, and definitely not a day for churlish comments. This is a bit of history of which we should all be proud.
I've never quite understood why support for one team/club/sport means that you have to have a downer on all the rest. Without the rest we haven't got a sport to follow. So I for one will applaud the Latics' achievement. Well done.
Wouldn't it be great if we win the Challenge Cup as well? Now that's a double for Wigan of which we can all be proud.
