Wane contract EXTENDED
Wane contract EXTENDED
Wigan have a 12 month option in their favour. IL has taken it up.

I'm pleased with that as I can't think of anyone I'd rather have coaching us!

I agreed, and a coach who is 100% for Wigan both on and off the field.Kittwazzer wrote:I'm pleased with that as I can't think of anyone I'd rather have coaching us!

Happy with that indeed. However I think IL isn't half a 'careful' boss.
IMO wane deserves a new contract, not just an option taken up.
IL should count himself lucky that hes got a coach who's willing to promote youth as much as he is doing because many others would want to bring in players and ultimately put IL out of pocket.

That's because others, especially antipodeans, would be under more pressure to deliver. They would want to enhance their reputation as they eyed their next job. Wane doesn't fall into this category.AdamMac wrote:Happy with that indeed. However I think IL isn't half a 'careful' boss.

Why? I have said for a while I thought IL would take the option up. Wane has earned it by getting us to Wembley but IL is no mug and realises we have had an easy draw this year. IL will want to wait and see (as he did with Noble) if Wane deserves a longer term deal than just another year.IMO wane deserves a new contract, not just an option taken up.
Any coach who doesn't put pressure on the chairman to spend to target a top player from outside the club isn't wanted here!IL should count himself lucky that hes got a coach who's willing to promote youth as much as he is doing because many others would want to bring in players and ultimately put IL out of pocket.
In any case under Wane we have signed Taylor, Smith, Green, Lauaki, Flower, Dudson the new Kiwi forward for next season whose name escapes me and probably other who I have missed out.

There is only two sure things for a coach and that is at some point they will either leave the club for a "better" job or get sacked/let go. They all want to enhance their reputations IMO, Wane included.Kittwazzer wrote: That's because others, especially antipodeans, would be under more pressure to deliver. I don't see any less pressure on Wane to deliver either. Having a one year option taken up rather than being given a longer deal is not exactly going to remove the pressure to deliver next season regardless of what happens this and isn't exactly a ringing endorsement.
How they go about delivering success is the issue.
It was Madge who got the junior teams playing the exact same systems and tactics as the first team presumably because he thought this was a good thing in itself and also I assume because that meant junior players slotted into the first team more easily. If that meant a better chance of success on-field and so an enhanced reputation for the coach why would we care?
If on the other hand a coach employed a set of ageing has beens to have a punt at short term success I am sure we would have.
Bottom line is I don't think you can generalise about coaches based on them being antipodean or not or what pressure anyone other than Wane will be under. Noble had a long term deal so was under less pressure than Wane and he was poor.

Why? because I think it shows solidarity between a clubs chairman and head coach, a vision they both agree on and ultimately they are both heading in the right direction.DaveO wrote:Thank God.AdamMac wrote:Happy with that indeed. However I think IL isn't half a 'careful' boss.

IMO any new players are more likely to sign for a club who's manager is tied down on a contract than one that might be gone in 12 months (not many people sign on a one year deal)
Wane is only planning long term because of the benefit to the club he loves, other coaches wouldn't, not on this contract. They would want a short term fix. IMO I think IL takes liberties with wanes loyalty and love for wigan.
