When Westwood was playing for Wakefield Academy, Wigan were considering signing him, but because of him having a bad record of discipline, it would appear that they decided otherwise.

Great player, but he lets himself down at times.

When Mac was sent off for his late hit on Laffranchi, the referee was miles away from the incident and made a much belated call from what appeared to come from a call into his earpiece from the video ref. You could hear the call during continuation after the tackle. Mac was sent off on the strength of that call and not what referee robey had seen. That being the case why couldn't the video ref have made the call against quasimodo in the same manner?

IMO it was the right call Benny being sent of would of ruined a great final. If he made the call to send him off then was proven wrong it would just come down on him

Surely Westwoods punch was a sending off offence Kaii.
Had wire won the game we would have been livid that the offence was missed or not picked up correctly by the officials.
As we won the pressure is off, however, the incedent still happened.

It might be the right thing to send him of for the punch but as you said we won, so i can look back at the decision with no negative feelings and just happy we well and truly beat them and they had no excuses. If we did lose i'm not going to even pretend i'd still feel the same :D

Ben Westwood in England team to face Australia despite infamous punch

Ben Westwood will face Australia in the World Cup opener, despite his Grand Final moment of madness.

Warrington’s ‘Wrecking Ball’ misses England’s warm-up against Italy at Salford on Saturday after copping a one-game ban for punching Wigan’s Blake Green in Super League’s showpiece.

However, coach Steve McNamara insists hard man Westwood and Wigan’s Grand Final-winning skipper Sean O’Loughlin will face Australia at Cardiff on October 26.

“Ben is an outstanding player and is very well-liked by everyone in the camp,” said McNamara from the team’s South African training camp.

“He is a great asset to any international team but has paid the price for his indiscretion in the Grand Final.

“That isn’t a concern to me,” added McNamara, who will not select O’Loughlin after just one outing in the last six weeks due to an Achilles problem.

“Benny has had a lot of game time under his belt so a week off won’t do him any harm.”

O’Loughlin has missed several end-of-season international tournaments through injury, but McNamara is confident he’ll be in the thick of the action this time.

“‘Lockers’ has only had a limited amount of practice and needs more training under his belt. We have an intense competition coming up.

“To throw him into potentially a six-game tournament, plus a warm-up match, without a sustained period of training, would put him at more risk.

“We need him throughout the whole tournament, starting with Australia.” Former Salford prop Vic Mauro has been replaced in Italy’s squad by Tim McCann from Tweed Head Seagulls.

Star-struck Callum Phillips’ remarkable rise from the Cumberland League to the World Cup is complete.

And the Sellafield power worker’s shock call-up by Steve McCormack means Scotland could field two pairs of brothers in the competition.

Workington half-back Phillips, 21, joins older brother Brett in the squad after Gareth Moore withdrew with a shoulder problem.

Andrew and Ian Henderson have also been selected.

“This time last year I was playing for Seaton against Maryport in the Cumberland League,” said Phillips.

“Now I’m going to be in the World Cup with players like Danny Brough.”

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Haven't seen as much super league as you all.
Westwood struck me as a throw back to thirty years ago. I hope he doesn't pull that stuff in the World cup or England will lose a player for the 80 minutes.

International refereeing won't abide it. They'll more than react if it's an NRL Reff , after making punches an automatic send off this season Weswood would be gone.

I hate that , it ruins the contest when one team has 12 players.

It does ruin the contest, no doubt, but it shouldn't matter if it's the 1st minute, or the last minute - the rules the same and should be administered that way. Otherwise it just brings inconsistency.

I remember a few years back at the DW against the Aussies, Adrian Morley got sent after just 30 seconds. We only just lost in the last few moments, I recall, but everyone knew really the game was over in that first minute!

Good signs for England Seeing Westwood race in to back up Tomkins after Fafita and his mates.

All good male bonding that stuff when there are factions within a team.

A tick for Westwood ?
