If you are a fringe/relatively new first team player then personally I would think like Botica did you would try to develop a skill such as place kicking in order to secure that place. The club could aid that as they did in the gang of 4 era by employing a Dave Aldred type. Aldred was snare by Union sadly.

The likes of Thornley, Gelling, the new left winger need to try to add place kicking to their armaroury. Fans have to remember neither Bots or Pat were kickers so sometimes you can have a kicker waiting to be found. Thornley may not be able to kick to save his life but he spent his junior RL in teams with Owen Faz so he never got the chance.

Not quite relevant but Burke could place kick as a junior.

Think you're right about thornley & gelling, a kicking game would raise them above the other. For me thornley played better with pat because he gave him the ball asap while gelling sometimes kept hold of it a bit too long. Gelling is the more skilful player so kicking would cement his place now the priority on the left isn't give it to pat.
